Hi all, I've been bike shopping today, what fun - must remember to leave the non-cycling wife-to-be and baby at home next time!

I must admit that I walked into the shop with my heart set on the Cube Peloton, but having tried one, the guy in the LBS coerced me into trying more bikes (twisted my arm really hard) I feel that the Giant Defy may be more suited to me. I just wondered if anyone had anything good or bad to say about either; I'll be testing them both again in a couple of weeks before I make my final decision, all comments and suggestions gratefully received.

Cheers

Stan

I can't complain in any way about my Defy, but that is 'cos it fits me.
The Peleton looks an equally good bike on paper, but as you have found, not all bikes fit all people equally well.

If it feels right, then whichever bike it is, buy it (within normal financial constraints, obviously!)

Hi Mr Stan, how many shops did you visit? If only the one, then it might be worthwhile trying others, as you have already found out that "other options" might be better than what you have in mind.

Also, have a think about what you want from the bike (e.g. is it important to you that it has a certain groupset, or decent wheels, or a double/compact/triple chainset, etc...or might it be important in a few months?) and what your maximum budget is (you'll have a figure you think will cover it, but include the "at a push" limit as well, as it may - I said may - save you money in the longer term if it eliminates future upgrades.)

Hi guys, thanks for the replies, I suppose what I was really getting at is do people have any good/bad experiences with either bike, i.e. reliability etc.

Noodley, just the one, but he has a good variety of brands including Giant, Cube and Specialized, he also gave me a lot of his time and was very good at estimating saddle height etc. (Transition Cycles in Bedford BTW) most importantly he didn't give me the hard sell and was happy to let me try as many as possible.

I would say its more important (to me) to have a decent drive train and I can look at better wheels in the future, I'm also going to have a crack at building my own wheels this year; moving house in a couple of weeks and I'll have a shed to spend hours in....

I have a Defy 3 and love it.

My friend has a Cube...and loves it!

Do what feels right for you! If you end up with either bike I doubt you'll be disappointed

Can't believe I haven't chipped in earlier to preach the word of Cube .... Saw the 2012 Peleton in Bromley Bikes this week-end, lovely looking piece, nice specs too !! Cube all the way for me.

PS. I have a cube, fantastic in every way possible.

MisterStan, you may want to read the June 2012 edition of Cycling Plus. Both bikes were rated. Cube was rated 3.5 stars and Giant Defy 1 rated 4.5. I've ridden any of the two, but I think the Cube is the better looking bike and it has 105/Ultegra components for under £1k.

Sorry, I meant I've never ridden any of the bikes.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. As we have now moved house SWMBO is happy for me to make the purchase. I'm going to give both bikes another longer test ride and make a decision based on that.
