Really?! Mind you you have the 2011 right? So a different frame than today? I've got a 2013 Defy 3, stock 25mm tyres clear the frame and brake assembly by >0.5 cm, easily

Stu
Hi stu what size defy are you on & what height are you if you don't mind me asking?

I'm 180cm (measured by my sister last night) so 5ft 11 and a half. Defy is the M/L. I'm long of leg and short up top so had a shorter stem put on the handlebar.

Reckon Stuart I must be an L then if I am 187cm with a bike fitted bb to saddle top of 78.3cm. My mate who is 190cm rides an ML & suggests I should be the same. Can't help but think he must be cramped on that.
Anyway I am hopefully getting a ride on a ML tomorrow so that should help make up my mind whether that is the size or if I need to size up.

Testing is really the only way! If you're buddy has a more evenly distributed top and bottom half than I do, he may well find the M/L ok. Or if he uses the Defy to race then having a smaller one for his size might make him feel he can get lower down on it. There again some people simply prefer the feel of a smaller bike under them, others like to feel "perched".

Without actually being there, I would hunch you would want a L but that's just a hunch!

I had someone tell me the M/L would be perfect for me but the M felt so much more comfortable. I would have it slightly smaller again if possible, i still shortened the stem, i reckon i'm one of those. I don't race though, although i have been known to chase after limo's full of drunk pretty people.
