Hi All,

I am looking for some help as I am looking to buy my first hybrid bike. I am going to be using it to keep fit mainly.

I have been looking at probably buying a used bike as this will be my first proper bike.

I have mainly been looking at buying Giant Rapid 2010 to 2012 does anyone have an experience of these ? and what are they like ?

Also is there any other bikes similar to the Rapid that you could recommend that I look for or do some research on ?

The rapid is a great bike. Known as a road hybrid. Also look at Specialized sirrus, cannondale quick.
If your using it for road, paths and canals etc ...... Good choice

I'm not an expert on current bikes but I can tell you that the majority of modern bikes are made in one factory, Giant. So the best way to deciede which one to go for is to examine and compare specs. Also shop around for spevial offers.

They do but i don't know the names. Check there web sites. Also great bikes.
My advice would be to try them all before buying

Trek 7.x fx are their racier hybrids but less so than a Sirrus or rapid. Scott do the sub range. Look at the Evans site, they do most brands

If your purely hoping to keep fit and not intending any real utility use I'd look at a Sportive bike such ad a Giant defy or Pinnacle Dolomite. At a pinch they can both take mudguards and carriers if you have a change of heart and decide to commute or tour, but I you get into it you'll quickly become dissatisfied with a hybrid as a fitness bike and it'll save you the angst of soon wanting to upgrade.

I ride a rapid in the winter and a advanced defy in the summer ,the geometry suits me!,
Spec of components will get better as the number gets lower,so a 1 is better than a four
I have had only trouble with a rear wheel to which giant have replaced, and have only heard good things about customer service,I would replace tyres straight away due to the fact that all tyres fitted to giants are made of butter,
That's my heart felt opinion found with multiple visits from the puncture fairy who also carried a knife!

You don't seem to have mentioned what kind of riding you expect to do, roads, cyclepaths, towpaths, trails, muddy offroading etc.

Just to give some conflicting advice, I went for a more mountain bike type hybrid in the Giant Roam for fitness and I'm very happy with it and always want to get out on it. I doubt its hugely slower than a flat-bar hybrid on the road, despite 2-3kg more and with a bit wider tyres (and extra resistance is extra calories ;)), but it means as well as road routes I can still do muddy trails, towpaths etc at speed. If i were to do mainly road routes with sportives or club cycling I would probably look for a drop bar bike, road or cyclocross. It's really important what you think you're likely to do on it, what you plan to ride it on etc

My Giant's tyres were terrible too, looked like a bullet-hole ridden cartoon saloon in just a few hundred miles.
