Giant road bike fans

Would it be worth buying a second hand hardly used defy three that I don't really know the history on or keep my defy five I bought from new ?
The changes would be ....
Defy 5 - 8 speed shimano 2300
Defy 3 - 9 speed sora

and carbon forks .

I love the five but I am no lycra lout so the 0.1 seconds are of no use to me . However if the ride is that much better I may take a punt on it .
Waddya think ?

Hard to say really, I've not ridden a Defy with the alloy forks for comparison. The fork would be the main difference, shifting may or may not be noticeably better, otherwise it's exactly the same.

If the 3 has the 2013 Sora with the Tiagra-style shift levers, it would be possible to shift up when on the drops. That could make it a better experience.

Would you be selling the 5 to help pay for it? If so, it's worth it if the 3 has the 2013 Sora. Otherwise, stick with what you've got IMO

Agree with the post above, only upgrade if sora offers the advantage you want.

no it has the thumb style shifters like the five and yes I would have to sell the five to pay for it . Maybe I should buy it and swap the forks over and sell it on

I don't think the carbon fork is worth the upgrade alone. As you say the slight weight loss will be nice but of no real value,and the shifters are still thumb operated. If it had sora 2013 or Tiagra shifters, then worth it

How big is the budget ?

You might find going older in the range will actually give you a much nicer bike to ride

There isn't a budget I just saw the bike and thought I could sell my 5 and get the 3 but thinking back to when I bought new I didn't really see the benefit in paying the extra for the 3 as I didn't know if a road bike was what I really wanted for my chores . Now I am in love with it I wish I had bought the 1

I've got an earlier Giant (OCR1), and am really impressed with it (still/again) . They have restyled the frames a bit on the newer bikes to make them a bit more funky, but realistically how much money do you need to spend to better it nowadays...£1200-£1300 maybe ?

I'd rather take a good holiday with the difference betwenn what I'd get 2nd hand and that

I had to buy the one because after i saw it i knew if i bought the 2 or 3 i would always just be wishing i was on the one.
