It's a nice idea for an advert, done with good humour but with a clear message. But I agree with your blog, the video doesn't really explain why a cyclist needs space, or how much the space should be.

Aaaagh! One of those things that's so very, very nearly right, I feel a bit churlish and curmudgeonly being critical.

But just a wee bit of CGI streeeeeeeetching the cyclists' arms at 0.24 - 0.25 to make clear the space given?

And the last graphic is just plain ********, *******, ******** wrong! It says every f*ckw!t who passes within 2 foot of a cyclist is giving ample space?

She's what - 10-11 years old? Sorry - but at my age, if a car passed that close, and I stretched out my arm like that, I'd be borrowing their cigarette lighter!

[edited to add] Is it unduly cynical of me to note that their bl**dy logos get more space than the cyclist in the final graphic? [/edit]

One thing to note - motorists tend to give cyclists who ride in primary about twice as much room as those who ride in secondary. Riding in primary as the default road position forces drivers to wait until they can change lanes to pass safely. Riding in secondary tempts them to squeeze past.

In short, if you don't take the space you need, they will deny it you.Don't ask drivers to 'give' you space. Instead, take it.

Ride as if you own the road ahead of you, because under the rules of right of way, you do.
