Giving up commuting

I understand. But, when the price of petrol soars again (you know it will), people in cars suddenly get much friendlier.

I was in my car, this evening, and saw a car following a bike, blow the horn at the cyclist. There was an empty lane next to them, but the moterrorist had to blow the horn, rather than change lanes and pass. Cyclist hopped up onto the pavement. We can all tell an anecdote every day.

As others have vbc, do what you have to do, it's important that for your family and work you have peace of mind and not have to worry about the cycling dangers. However after some of the weekend rides that you mentioned you intend to continue with you may find that giving the commute another try later on will be OK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's a long going RTA issue with me..long story.........like most RTA's are with bikes, despite an early 3rd party admission of fault.........fixing the body bits will take time........

I know what you mean, I used to work in motor claims, while it was an enjoyable job there were many times where our client had an admission of liability only for that to be denied by the other persons underwriters, knightmare.

Re the accident, I still have no idea what happened, for all I know I could have been hit by someone and thats why my memory card frommy camera is missing, I still get very twitchy at that point on Hyde Rd....Once I get over that I need to rebuild my knee, that I suspect will take much longer, commuting of way too enjoyable to let that put me off though

I'm sure you're not alone in feeling this way. A month after my off, I'm commuting by bus and walking, though I miss my cycle commute a lot. At the moment, I can't physically cycle. Medical still to come. Don't know quite how I'm going to feel when I finally do get back on a bike - a bit jittery for a while, I imagine. I'm planning to pootle around the block a good deal before considering resuming my commuting.

I'm not starting a 'cycling isn't dangerous' debate, but speaking from experience, to those who say cycling isn't dangerous - I understand where you're coming from, really I do, and statistically you may be right on the nose. But if you are one of those that have been hit by someone and have had to take time off work, have spent hours filling out forms, seen your lovely bike written off, have had to rely on family members to help you get dressed, been taking tablets for what seems like forever - I think you might have a different perspective. It can really affect your confidence.

To the OP - the thing is to give it time. Over time, you might feel differently, you might not. But you shouldn't feel guilty about doing whatever you feel safest and most comfortable about doing, whether that's cycling or walking.

I would like to think that the combination of a few months off the bike and the late spring weather will act as a catalyst to get you back on your bike. That said, if you enjoy the walk and don't fancy commuting by bike, why not think about some off roading on a MTB - then you only have to worry about your own limitations...

The incident happened on the A38/Gypsypatch Lane junction (for anyone who knows the north Bristol area) on my way home to Little Stoke from Filton airfield - only one way I can really take and longer routes/detours are all in built up/high traffic volume areas.

Just going to do a bit more walking for a while and as Mrs C works a 3 1/2 day week, I can have the car on Fridays!!

Yes I know it .. near Rolls Royce... and I know what you mean about alternative routes ... there are places in Bristol that you are constrained to a couple of routes because of airfield/railway/motorway or river/floating harbour.

A friend works at RR and had lots of hassle around there from car drivers when it was snowing for wanting to cycle in the car tracks!!!
