Hi guys , iam doing a cycle from Glasgow to glenshee soon , the route looks ok ,but i have concerns about cycling on the A9 from Black ford to Perth. Has any body ever cycled on this road ,
Sorry I don't think anyone here has done that. No doubt someone will be along in due course who has though, but until then.....
Are there no back roads or paths? The A9 sounds hideous at the best of times!
Welcome to the forum by the way, people usually do get a better response than you have had I'm afraid, but don't take it to heart, no doubt someone will be along eventually who can answer you.
My first port of call is usually Google maps. Select directions - enter your to and from details and make sure you click on the bicycle symbol. Although not strictly accurate on all ocassions, it is still pretty good. Blackford to Perth here
I live near to the A82, and seeing cyclists on it at any time other than the middle of the night/very early in the morning when there is nobody about, genuinely makes me cringe, there are better and safer cycle paths and roads! Why be suicidal about it?
I imagine the A9 is the same, but only worse - If you value your life, step away from the main road and don't make someone like me cringe on your behalf.
If you have nerves of steel and are looking for the shortest route and it a nice sunny day then ride the A9, if its peeing down with rain then keep off it as the crap thrown up from the vehicles will obscure you from the drivers vision. There are cycle paths in places alongside of the A9, but not along the whole of its length. There are longer routes south off the A9 using minor roads but of course you will not get the excitement and adrenaline rush the A9 Offers. For all the Gloom and Doom, lots of cyclists do ride the A9.
Alistair please ignore the recommendation by TTM. There are far too many examples of abysmal driving on this road tragically illustrated in the casualty statistics. It may be shorter, but that may go for your life as well. There is no pleasure to be had cycling on the A9 and I suggest the fully loaded cyclists I have seen using the road have probably done so out of ignorance of the more suitable alternatives available.
