Gmail account - don't always receive emails

Some emails to my gmail account seem to be getting blocked for some reason. I am sure it is not a case of some people miss-typing my email address as I have tried sending mails to the people concerned and then ask them to reply, but the mail still does not get through. However if they try and send a mail to one of my other mail accounts it always gets through.

If you search the Google mail support forums there are actually a large number of posts about problems with mail not being received, many of which seem similar to mine. However someone from Google usually post a response saying it could not be possibly be anything to do with them, and advising the poster to do obvious things like see if the missing mails are in their junk mail folder.

I suspect Google are actually blocking mails that look like the might be coming from dubious sources - though in my case this includes my mother and my OH, who are both less than impressed that I am apparently ignoring their mails!

Does anyone know what's going on, and what I can do about it.

Easy answer is not to use gmail, nasty stuff. All your mail are belong to us and all that.

Unless you run your own server there will aways be some one looking after your mail and most will filter spam so you never have any real control.

Silly question, but is this on your pc or your phone?

I was suffering from a similar problem on my phone and found out through the Android forums that your phone will hold back data if it is short on memory.
I could actually see a number of emails in my inbox, but could retrieve or view them in any way.
I deleted some unnecessary apps and cleared history etc and my emails appeared.

If it is pc, then I guess it is screening getting excitable

I once read (sometime back) that if you were to send two emails with same content (say a cake recipe) with the title in one being 'cake recipe' and the other being 'bomb recipe', there would be a delay on the 'bomb' one due to screening. Never tested it, so don't know how true that is mind!

Thanks for the replies - here's some quick responses...

1. Use Gmail because I have previously had email accounts with smaller ISPs who have been taken over/gone out of business, and I have then had the big hassle of having to change my email address. I figure that Gmail will at least be around for the foreseeable future, and suspect that the other big email services like Hotmail will soon start scanning my mail in the way Google does.

2. Mail is being collected via a PC.

Have you looked in your junk/spam/trash folders? Do you have any filters?

Yes I have looked - nothing there.

And no I don't have any filters set.

Gmail will have other spam measures in place too reject mail before they even except it. May be the mail you are expecting is falling fowl of them. The mail you are expecting could be originating from servers which are on some black list or other which can happen very easily. In most cases this should result in a bounce so the sender would get a notification of some sort. But lots of people don't know what too make of them and just delete them so are non the wiser

It is possible that the mails are blacklisted, but gmail does not seem to offer any route for querying this and getting them removed from the blacklist if that is indeed what has happened.
