Having been through several consultations for my chest complaint, treatment including chest drain, CT scan, bronchioscopy etc etc, I can only marvel at everyones care and commitment on the shop floor, from receptionists, right through the nurses, consultants, to the recovery room staff, you have my admiration. Some treatment hasn't been very nice, but they cared, they put me at ease, they were fantastic..to a man (and a woman naturally)

Whatever is wrong with the NHS, the healthcare professionals on the shop floor, .with a smile and genuine care, have done me proud...and the NHS.

I will be sending them a thankyou card to that effect....

I have a colleague in our US office who had cancer a few years ago and at the time his health insurance covered the treatment, he was telling me he can no longer get insurance from any company in the land, not even limited cover to exclude a re occurrence, nothing. So basically if he get seriously ill again he will die. Simple as that. What a farked up country the good 'ol US of A really is, gun ownership a right, health care a privilege. I too have nothing but praise for the NHS and its staff, we really don't know how lucky we are sometimes.

Just the other day, on another forum (work related not cycling) a few of the girls were slating the NHS big time as one of them has had to wait 3 whole weeks for a knee op. I suggested that if she didn't like the NHS she went to BUPA or moved to the USA. One of the US girls came on and said that her knee op cost $12,000 and that she thinks that the NHS is a marvel. Even though she paid she still had to wait for more than 3 piddly weeks and suggested that lassie with her dodgy knee shuts the hell up. Total uproar on the forum. I got some popcorn and watched.

I love the NHS, they do an awesome job in some tricky circs. Hubby is on dialysis and on the transplant list and it doesn't cost us a bean in real terms. Not even for parking. The renal staff are great and seem genuinely excited when one of their charges goes off to transplant.

So glad that I live in the UK for so many reasons and the NHS is one of them.

As a nurse who has worked in the NHS for over 30 years, it's really nice to read a few people being positive about the NHS!
It has it's faults, it can be improved in places, but my experience is still that most of my colleagues still want to go the extra mile for their patients.

Recent experience with a close family member in the last few years has been superb.

I've never had a problem with the NHS really.
My GP was a bit of an ass a while ago but seems a little better now. Dentistry is a little costly sometimes but that's cos I'm broke. Also someone forgot to forward my referral for psychotherapy and left me waiting over well over a year for a 'six month wait'.

However, overall, and on the 'front line', it is marvelous.

The NHS has saved my daughter, me and both sets of parents, ColinJ and lots more people I know...

The only things wrong with it that I get told about by practitioners I know are the incompetence of some of the people in charge of policy and management, and the government's privatisation by the back door.

Well God doesn't seem to be blessing us according to today's news!
Without wishing to wish anything unpleasant to happen to anyone.....if George/Geoffrey Frogspawn could be struck by a bolt of lightening I might at least stop being an atheist and become agnostic.

I think that's it really. Pretty everyone who you come in contact as a user of the NHS does a great job (ok there will be exceptions) What the perennial problem seems to be is how the thing is managed overall.

My experiences this year have been distinctly average.

Standing for almost 5 minutes at a reception window as 3 members of staff kept looking at their computers. 1 eventually got off her lazy ass.

Getting sent away without anyone bothering to patch up my knee, after being involved in a crash. No one even bothered to clean it and I had to get the bus home with my bloody knee exposed to the world as my cycling tights had been cut open.

My sisters and I had a few bad experiences with our elderly parents in hospital at times, but I don't have any complaints about my two recent A&E visits and subsequent admissions. I've been getting good treatment from the local nurses for injections and blood tests and sorting out prescriptions for me in a hurry.

I appreciated the sense of humour of the A&E doctor who came in with my d-dimer blood test results last week. He looked me up and down and said "You are not pregnant, are you?" I confirmed that it was highly unlikey! He continued "That's a pity - you almost certainly have a clotting problem again then ..." Well, it made me laugh, anyway!

My mum was in hospital during December and January, and for the most part the treatment she received was excellent. There were one or two instances where a ward was plainly understaffed, and patient care did suffer as a result, or where the transfer from one ward or specialism to another was pretty poor. But this was in the winter, where the hospital was acknowledged to be under a lot of pressure.

Mum had a lot of tests done very quickly, and the diagnosis, although it was bad news, was delivered very sympathetically.

She was moved to a small NHS unit to see out her last days and the care that she, and we her family, received there was second to none. We shall always be grateful for that......

I don't wish to jump to conclusions but it sounds like you didn't really need medical attention if you were able to go home on the bus. Casualty departments are under huge pressure and really cannot be expected to provide a service for such minor injuries as a grazed knee.
