Here's the link for the site that shows you the cost of different medical procedures in the US, The Healthcare Blue Book..

http://www.healthcarebluebook.com/

Just type a procedure in the search box and it shows you what you might be expected to pay. It's grim. No wonder that 60% of all personal bankruptcies in the Sates are due to medical bills.

GPs can be a pain, but once you get passed them to the Hospital then they (NHS) earn their weight in gold. Just wish old folks wards and high dependancy wards had more staff. The nurses are run off their feet.

Doesn't help if your family member really isn't interested in asking questions about their recovery... Argh.

Me when I've been in for me, you ask, they tell you straight. My current issues have been handled really well by the hospital, even had two consultants in with me explaining my options and why they would not consider certain routes. Very good.

My main issue is GPs happy to dole out drugs before you get to the folk that know their stuff.

We like NHS staff so much we give them 10% off in the shop. Our local hospital can be pretty poor but they have quite a lot to contend with. Management can be somewhat dodgy but the medical staff generally cannot be faulted. However, once old and dying the service can be somewhat lacking.

I wish hospices were included within the NHS.

The same hospital has a private wing but is run on behalf of the trust and is not profit making. It also means if something goes pear shaped your in the best place possible.

Half the a and e problem is because there are not enough GP's. Cannot get to see a GP for a week, go to a and e instead.

The NHS is like that little girl in whatever poem or song it was....when it is good, it is very very good, and when it is bad, it is horrid.
I have a long family history with the NHS... my parents, like many in their day, came to UK from Ireland in the 1950s as they were out of work over there... both came in their late 20s, early 30s, ended up as nurses, and both worked for the NHS till retirement/death (both died v soon after retiring). I had many other relatives who also came over...all worked for the NHS in various guises. My sister (now 55yrs old) has worked in the nHS since the age of 16. My brothers used to. I worked in the NHS for about 6 years, on and off. Mrs F has spent her entire working life in the NHS too, as have many of our friends.
I will defend the NHS, the idea of it, till the day I die (probably in an NHS hospital(). We are SOOOOOOOO lucky to have such a system, and should not take lightly the changes the current govt are introducing. They aren't evil, and they think they are doing the right thing, but I disagree. Strongly. It is changing, and it will inevitably get worse if we don't stand up to defend it.

The complaints we have in the family seem to be down to my in laws being at an age they don't question what a doctor says. We look at drugs and say no, they just trust. They don't ask what if, what's that... They also won't listen to what we say as kids in an era of better nutrition.

Vitamin D is a biggy.... We don't get it from the sun now, cos we cover up. Older and frail people get very little. Huge issue.
