I hadn't seen that when I posted earlier but it wouldn't surprise me. The two were good friends, training (on and off bikes) together and they were born and lived just a few miles apart.
I'm sure that it won't help Edwards at all to know that he was one of two or three people who Marco rated on the grid.
I think that someone (Lee, was it?) up the thread said that the strap possibly ripped from the lid and I think it's something like that.
Safety equipment has a defined point of failure, or it starts to become more of a risk. Without going too much into details, I hope, but It looked like Edwards basically rode up Marco's back and up into the base / back of the helmet and something has to give when you've got 250kg of bike and rider hitting you like that. The chance in a million.

The one thing I can't work out is what happened to the bike on the exit to the corner - he was well ahead of Rossi and Edwards with one rider in between going into the bend. Next thing the bike is careering back into the middle of the course.

According to the crash net site Marco Simoncelli's bikes low sided then the tyres gripped again and the bike careered back across the track into Edwards and Rossi's path instead of sliding out into the gravel trap

I was watchng it live and it made me shudder I knew from the avoidance of the cameras and quick cancellation of the GP that it was probably terminal....
No words can ..... least of all for his family and friends; Rosi must be inconsolable.
Moto GP needs people like marco to keep it alive-some of the other riders are corporate clones.
I reckon everyone who rides a motorcyle is probably taking it a bit easier today..I was.

By coincidence, I was reading the October issue of Bike magazine on Friday night, specifically the 6 page article on Simoncelli. He did seem to have the style and personality to take over from Rossi compared to all the whiners and whingers who complain when others actually try to race them on track.

I was - and still am - very sad indeed about Simoncelli's death. Not just because he was easily the most entertaining and gutsy rider on the grid, but also because he seemed like a proper character and a genuinely nice bloke. I'm not usually one to get down about the deaths of people I don't know, but this one is an exception.

I watched the race on Sunday evening having recorded it and my first thought was OMG, then i went and checked the internet to fine that he had passed away.
I was totally shocked and saddened, he was my favourite rider.

I think he was everyone's favourite rider. Ah well ... all we can do now is wait for Johan Zarco to work his way up to Moto GP. He's been great to watch on the 125s.
