I'm taking me old mum shopping in Morrisons later today. I'll be able to catch up with the trals and tribulations of Katie , Kerry , Pete and a few others from the covers of such publications while waiting at the checkout.

We've a mate who communtes by train and sometimes brings an abandoned copy back for Mrs 3BM to have a look at. Looking at one is a bit like rubber-necking a car crash, you know it's wrong but sometimes you can't stop yourself sneaking a peek and you wish you hadn't afterwards.

Picking up the recycling on Tuesday, I happened upon a copy of New! magazine (like Heat, only more so), and on a whim took it back to 'read' over lunch.

What a load of crap. It was mostly about Jordan and Peter Andre, except for the bit about the winner of Big Brother and her breast enlargment, and the section on women I'd never heard of wearing revealing frocks.

People PAY to read that stuff. People email comments in about whether Jordan is a slapper. People CARE!

Frankly, it made me feel better about my tendency to watch Eastenders, at least they occasionally tackle a real life issue.

As George Orwell wrote in the 40s, "What goes by in the name of entertainment is simply an attempt to lower consciousness". People have to be manipulated so they can feel happy about being robbed.

Do what I do and *chill*. No point worrying about such matters.

I inevitably catch such gossip in the office and catch some of the 'celeb' stories in the media, but it's not worth getting stressed about. Simply smile and think a wonderful thought - you can fly!

But, all classes are affected by it ;)

I'm not up for a scrap, so I'm amend my original statement to "...and a future me will be able to tell you exactly what class they (the archeaologist) think they (the people) were....";)

Although it is true that the different rounds have noticably different types of recycling - different booze, different papers (or no papers except freebies), different canned goods, different levels of box cleanliness.

I agree all classes are affected by some sort of 'celeb' culture - I leafed through a copy of Yorkshire Life in a cafe on Sunday, and there were the snaps of local worthies at charity events, racing etc. Just the same, but less breast on display. The Lynda Snell kind of snooty celebrity.

The other thing that amazes me is that these 'celebs' like Jordan are held up as attractive. Most of the time I just think she and the others look like someone who needs to be rescued from under 3 inches of make up. Most of the blokes also look unattractive to me - maybe because I go for character, and they don't seem to have any...

The best line from the whole mag though? When BB winner <insert name, I've forgotten it, apparently she's a 'model') was asked what she'd do with the £71K prize money, her first reply was "I'd buy some clothes for my chihuahuas...."

The strange thing is that the women I know who have large breasts would rather have smaller ones. Two that I know of, had reduction surgery.

i absolutely HATE these magazines! People seem to obsess about the issues they cover, Jordan is the worst. She is one of the worst human beings in the public spotlight, every time i see her at the top of the bestsellers list i cringe, she doesn't even write herself. This recent split with her ex is crammed into everyones faces, adverts on TV seem to be on every week, advertising a new "must see' and exclusive interview where she reveals yet more secrets, oh who gives a ****!

sorry to rant...
Didn't I read in Private Eye the other week that she's had three (or is it four?) biographies published? Is she out of her 20s yet?

At least you didn't waste brass by buying the silly rag, settle down and have a cuppa (and never mind those common cockernees, check out Emmer and Coro ... at least they're funny) ;).

I did have to laugh today.

Our OVS (very posh and clever and lovely) was photocopying (which is near the recycling box and the ladies loo). As I came out of the loo I saw that she had picked up a copy of 'Real' out of the RC box, just for boredom time I imagine.

I was like Robocop.

Turn away from the mag, turn away from the mag, turn away from the mag.

She did.
