Brings to mind a bit of a documentary I saw once with Garrison Kieller revisiting his hometown...in one scene he was in the barbershop - clearly a local hotbed of gossip and general conviviality - and the barber said to the guy he was working on "Your hair is waving, Jim." Jim looked quite pleased with this, until the barber added..."Yes...it's waving bye-bye."

There's a double standard though. Older women who don't dye their grey hair - let herself go.
Older man who does dye his grey hair - silly old fool.
A few of my middle aged lady friends have recently grown out the dye and are grey and proud. I think it's more acceptable these days, what with so many youngsters going for the grey/white dye. Personally I love natural long grey hair.
