Train ride to Soller.

Is there still a tram to Puerto de Soller? Tis a long time since I was there.

It's a bit more complicated than that...

There certainly was when we stayed there in the spring.

Palma is a nice place for a mooch, with a rather nice range of glass a in the cathedral. But I spent most of my time in the island suffering death by PowerPoint. We were staying in Puerto de Soller.

Just been there and got shafted by the car hire people at the airport, still in dispute over the extras that more than doubled our invoice.

Soller is nice, go to Agroturismo Finca Cas Sant just outside the centre for a glass of delicious home-made lemonade or orange juice straight from the trees.

Yes, the tram runs to Port Soller. Tramuntana bike hire has decent bikes, we hired Trek Emonda SL6 pros and they were good. The ride from Soller to Sa Calobra and back to Port Soller by boat would be good as that road is rated one of the best cycling roads in the world. The ride out to Cap Formentor is exhausting in hot weather but worth doing.

If you want to visit the cathedral, check in advance that it's going to be open. It was closed the day we went but the royal palace opposite, Palau de l'Almudaina, is well worth a visit. The bus service on the island is excellent and fast so you can visit all the other towns pretty easily. The road to Sa Calobra is fun but the place at the end is a crowded tourist hellhole.

Not hiring a car, the required sobriety sucks, and any cycling will be confined to sit-up-and-beg style pootling along the prom.

Train to Soller is on the to do list, as it Cathedral and Royal Palace. Ta.

The island has a really good bus system if you fancy getting out of Palma. It's all underground with the train station.

Great value and you can get to all places.

The whole point of Sa Calobra is you ride up it!

The biggest thrill must surely be riding down to Sa Calobra?

If you do down-up that means you've first got to ride up to the top of the road. Using the boat to return seems to make it into a logical circuit although it is about €20 and cyclists are notoriously tight.

Please enlighten me. I have very little experience of car hire and am going to Menorca in 2 weeks so need to aware of what to look out for.

We flew to Palma a month ago and rented a budget car from Click and Rent. We reckon they were good value and their service was excellent. Their depot is just outside the airport but there are free shuttle buses to take you there and back.

If you are hiring a car, it's worth investing in a decent road map. We got hopelessly lost trying to find the main road to Soller after leaving the car hire place. We did a quite comprehensive motorised tour of Palma that wasn't in our schedule.
