Going to visit my local Polski Sklep - so what's worth buying?

There's one on the way to the court where I'm currently doing jury duty and I want to stop and have a look. Apart from the obvious gherkins I know naff all about Polish food - so what should I try?

Second question - how many Poles must there be in that part of town to make it worth opening their own store? Methinks a lot more than the government is admitting.

It's a pity the Booths supermarkets empire doesn't extend to Meanwood; I see that Ilkley, Ripon and Settle are your nearest. They have superb locally-made produce.

And you wonder why some people view you as a teeny bit racist in your postings? :banghead:

Sausages, sausages and more sausages. There are too many to learn all the names, but I find pointing at one you like the look of works fine. Sometime the staff can advise you, sometimes their level of English isn't quite up to that (and anyway, how many ways can you describe a sausage?). They are mainly for boiling, or slicing and eating cold, and many are good for either.

Apart from that
- śmietana (Sour cream) - much cheaper than supermarkets
- pierogi - little dumplings, filled with meat or mushrooms or cabbage, sometimes also sweet

Some of the bread is good too, but the best stuff doesn't seem to make it over to these shores.

The rye bread with a touch of dill seed, especially if it's from the Kolos Bakery

Not necessarily a lot, when you look at how few you need for a village shop or street corner shop. Here in Leeds there has been a substantial Polish community ever since the late 1930s and most of the little Polish shops are long established. The young Poles usually shop at Lidl and Aldi, though, which is what they are familiar with.

Unfortunately, you have to sell one of your kidneys in order to be able to afford anything from there.

There used to be a Polish shop near me in Leeds when I was a student (it'd been there since my father in law was a student there in the 1950's) The proper, homemade European cheesecake was to die for. None of this American bashed biscuit base rubbish.
Mind you, you'd have to cycle at least 50 miles to work it off!

Ilkley and Ripon are within pedalling distance.....

But Waitrose is within walking distance.

I can't imagine the bread is in very good condition unless somebody is bringing the flour and baking it over here. You can never get good croissants for the same reason.

Interesting recommendations, thanks. I'm surprised nobody has mentioned beer yet! I'm not a lager drinker but am always interested in adding new ones to my collection of "beers of the world" - mostly African-brewed at the moment.
