Going vegetarian for a week

I haven't eaten meat since 1984, though I still eat fish. I don't miss it, but a comment by a cycling friend that he feels that a good steak after a hard ride really helps his recovery made me wonder if there is any truth in it? I suspect that there isn't, as long as one gets enough decent protein etc. from other food sources.

I went vegetarian two years ago and I really love it. I eat fish maybe weekly (so snooty veggies would say I'm not vegetarian but peseatarian). My main reasons were health (I have a dodgy heart and there's a body of research that shows that vegetarians are much less likely to die of heart disease) and ethical reasons (the amount of land/water/grain that is fed to animals and how many people that feeds as opposed to how many we could feed if we used that land/water/grain for feeding people).

My best recommendation would be ohmyveggies.com which is a wonderful website full of easy, delicious meals for every day (ie, not fancy).

I do chicken fajitas, so this week I'm doing them with chunky slices of field mushroom, really looking forward to it.

So we have done the initial weigh in and I have poured a bonus glass of apple juice with my Frosties. I wonder if @Drago wants to come round for tea.

Mrs Slowwww is running another half-marathon on Sunday and decided to cut meat and fish out of the family diet for a couple of weeks to get down to her racing weight.
The replacement meals have been imaginative and really tasty, but seemed to rely heavily on beans and pulses as protein substitutes, and so while our local furred and feathered friends have had some respite, there seems to have been a significant acceleration in the thinning of the ozone layer locally.

I turned into a "veggie" well to be precise a Pescetarian a few years ago, mostly for health reasons as the big C visited, hopefully in the clear now.

As my better half is veggie too, cooking isn't really a problem i.e don't need two sets of pans etc.

I've no problem with people eating meat.

What I did find after about three years was that I was getting tingling feet, which would drive me mad. Apparently it is caused by B12 deficiency so now take B12 tablets.

A few good thing about being veggie, apart from health reasons, are food bills are cheaper, also it's a lot easier to keep the kitchen and cooker clean, meals are quicker to prepare too.

Going out is a pain, even these days restaurants don't really cater for veggies.

I won't go back to meat.

One thing I've never found is difficulty in restaurants. Granted, it tends to be a few choices rather than dozens, but I've literally never had to compromise on something I didn't really want.

I probably will go back to it again in the future, but I will need some great recipes (some links posted on here, I know), as, when I did it before, I went unsupported as it were, so I just ate what I found. The result was that my diet became a bit boring at times.

The internet is an amazing thing, so many recipes at the click of a button, other vegetarians are happy to share their recipes too which can be a big help

I stopped eating red meat and fowl in 1983. After watching the Cowspiracy documentary recently I find myself drifting (very slowly) towards a vegan diet. It should be required viewing for everyone on the planet.

I'm a pescatarian too, having not eaten meat since 1989. I'm not sure your body will notice the benefits of missing out meat for a week. Apparently it takes at least a month to get rid of the chemicals that is pumped into meat nowadays. (Mind you, the water they inject into bacon to make it sizzle probably isn't that bad for you!)

Our bodies appear to be designed to gorge on meat once every week or so (usually after a burst of strenuous physical exertion - cycling will do if you don't actually go out and hunt your food with spears and knives). However, I went to school next to an abattoir which has rather put me off meat.

Having not eaten meat for so long, the smell of it cooking now makes me feel ill. My body has stopped recognising it as food. I used to miss cold ham and chips, but I'm over that now.

I wrote about a small change to my eating/cooking recently. I haven't gone veggie but we have a Organic veg box with just three bits of organically raised meat products in it as well. Anyone interested, (there are no recipes) my article is here.
It has had the effect that I wanted it to, of getting back to 'making do' with what you have instead of caving in to supermarket led 'choice'. Meat consumption has reduced to just the very high quality but less quantity supplied so we're roughly on a 4:3, 4 days entirely a veggie dish, 3 with a meat (normally a roasting joint is in the box so that's the Sunday tradition sorted...) Enjoying it hugely.
