Lifelong second generation veggie here - never had a problem with iron or B vit levels. My kids are 3rd generation vegetarians and they seem OK so far.... ;-)

The biggest problem is caterers (I won't call them chefs, proper chefs would have more imagination) thinking that pasta goes well with a roast dinner, or that you want yet another infernal goat's cheese and Mediterranean vegetable tart.

Madhur Jaffrey's World Vegetarian is a good book, as is Mary Berry's Ultimate Baking Bible.

isn't Marmite a good source of B12?

Marmite is one of the fortified foods I think

same here and never been flagged as an issue.

Of course the situation is different for vegetarians as opposed to vegans.

It's quite a tricky thing this B12 malarky. IIRC B12 is stored in the liver for a longish time but needs topping up now and again. Shoot me down in flames but that seems to me to be consistent with an evolutionary process where meat was available once in a while. The problem these days perhaps is that meat is excessively available. As in all things dose is the thing. A small dose of meat is enough probably. Just my guess folks. If there is a Doc or an evolutionary biologist out there - please correct me.

Vegetarians generally get enough B12 from cheese and such animal produce like things.

We've been having more veggie meals recently as the missus is trying to encourage our 15 month old to try more veg.
It hasn't bothered me not eating as much meat as usual tbh but don't think I could give it up completely, my wife on the other hand really hasn't missed it and is contemplating becoming a veggie.

I'm glad Liver is up there top of the list. Liver and Bacon for dinner tomorrow :hungry:, am I making TVC's mouth salivate now?

We've been having more veggie meals recently as the missus is trying to encourage our 15 month old to try more veg.
It hasn't bothered me not eating as much meat as usual tbh but don't think I could give it up completely, my wife on the other hand really hasn't missed it and is contemplating becoming a veggie.

So far I have found it really easy, although TVC is the cook and has to do a lot of chopping and prepping-all I do is eat. We have both agreed that meat free meals will definitely feature more often but we both still want to eat meat just not quite so much as we normally do.

What do you veggie (mostly vegan I think) folks do to keep your B12 levels correct? One of my veggie pals got quite deficient and had shots from the quack.
Just a thought , is this pal a drinker? Booze depletesB12 very quickly.

Due to cancer I had to have lots of of colon removed, including the specific bit of it which absorbs B12 from food, apparently I cannot get it on food, whatever I eat ... my B12 levels are tested annually, so's I can have injections if needed .... however, 7 years after the op I still have no shortage and no need for injections ... B12 recycles in the body pretty well for lots of ppl, apparently, but booze is a demon. I do not drink alcohol at all ...

Ooooh you've hit on a sore point here for me. Here in the states, vegetarians aren't really that common or that well catered for as a whole. Early on when I'd go out to a restaurant I'd ask if they could whip me up a vegetarian plate......

Almost everytime you do that (at least in the area where I live) you end up with friggin' pasta with squash, peppers and onions. I so happen to not care for pasta -or squash that much. Or if you attend a buffet function, invariably that is the vegetarian option as well -a complete lack of imagination and perception that vegetarians must eat pasta. I learnt to simply ask for a menu option that looked nice with the veggies but "just without the meat please". To be honest the goat cheese tart would be a blessing and a definite expansion on things!.

We once stayed in Burford in the Cotswolds. No shortage of places to eat in the evening, but only 2 didn't have mushroom risotto as the vegetarian option. OK, but not too difficult for me to knock up in my own kitchen.

So I now regard mushroom risotto as the chef's lazy attempt to cater for vegetarians.
