Good car camping tent to take bike touring? (or visa versa)

Can anyone suggest a tent which will double up for the above?

I am thinking of a 3-4 man tent with standing room for car camping in comfort with the other half (who has no interest in slumming it)..but would also double up for beery weekends with a mate on the bikes and be sturdy enough to take a battering outside sheltered campsites.

I am not bothered about weight within reason, as the sorts of trips I'm thinking about are 30-40mile-a-day weekends where it won't be much of an issue. Money is not too much of an issue either, as all parties will probably put some in the pot. I'm thinking something like this, but if anyone has any better/cheaper suggestions:

Also, any suggestions for good mid-range 2 man sleeping bags and airbeds are welcome. I've not even had to consider these before.

A Halla Tipi may well be the answer, big enough to be comfortable, even comes with a stove!. yet small enough to go heavyweight cycle camping if a few of you going along.

Even the 14 man one (without the stove or inner) could be taken easily on a bike, the whole thing weighs about 10kg, so a 5 man one would be half that weight.

Do you have a link for a supplier? Strangely, a quick google returns this thread as the first hit...

Look for ' HelSport Varanger 8-10 Camp'
get a Tipi with a porch, it makes it a lot more waterproof and gives a load of extra space for zero weight penalty

My brother got a nice 3 man tent. I went to pick it up, and only afterwards did I read on the side saying it weighed 13 KG! It's a nice tent but nearly 10kg overweight.

It's only nearly 10kg overweight if you define 3kg as being your approximate maximum weight limit for the tent that you are prepared to lug around. Other folk have different weight tolerances.....

Cheers, found them - I was wondering if you were yanking my chain ;) I have seen them before but they didn't spring to mind - but there's a blog of 2 germans touring Lapland in Winter in one. At work so can't have a look around atm, but will try to find some pictures with people in them to get a better idea of scale.

Regarding weight, the figure I had in mind was up to 10-12kg between the two of us when cycle camping. It is mostly for relaxed weekend trips on the bike and the milage will not be much.

Well, for bike touring I'd try and get the lightest tent possible with the specifications I want. I don't see any reason getting a heavier tent if you don't have to. I was just very surprised that a 3 man tent could weight so much when my 2 man weighs 2(something)kgs.

For two of you, (or even 4 or 5) then the Tipi above (actually called by the Finnish name of Laavu) will come in within your weight limit if you don't take the inner or the stove, neither of which are required for the uk in summer

Size wise, I can send you some photos of one in real use if you want, but I'm sure a troll around on t'web will find you lots more, as this make and model are very popular with Scout troops. Let's face it, who knows more about tents than the Scouts!

The stove feature does make me think about using it for car camping out of season...at least in theory. I'll have to discuss it with the interested parties. If you have any photos about it being used in anger great, otherwise will have a google tonight.

We bought a Terra Nova Laser Space 2 for cycle touring - it has standing height and a large porch. It's 3.3kg - fabric is 2.2kg, poles 1.1kg.
We've not used it in anger yet, but impressed with the test pitch in the garden!

It comes in a five man version.

Just an update, looks like I saw sense and we're going to get a mid range Vango which should fill both roles, but having a one-man tent already I think the priority is the car camping:

It was very tempting to blow alot on a scandanivian folly tho, I seem to be in the market for a new toy atm.
