Please Note: For those Londoners who haven't been made aware via this thread: http://www.cyclechat.net/threads/important-warning-for-london-cyclists.99401/this one will be returning to his native London in the next few weeks, and is pretty damn chuffed about that.

Anyway - I'm looking for suggestions for good commuter routes to Chelsea where I'll be working. But from where you might ask? Well that's what I'm asking too as I'll be looking for a place to live.

Currently erring towards West Hampstead as 1. I've lived there before and it's fairly comfy, good transport links etc; 2. Its reasonably affordable to rent there; 3. Appears to give a good ride into town, although I've never ridden it so don't really know.

Any thoughts?

You know I might even consider it, despite being from North London and I'm sure the very thought of it would shock and appall my family and friends, although with my family and friends mostly being in NE London, I'm not sure the distance of the SW would appeal too much.

Another vote for Battersea/Clapham as I can get from there to Victoria in about 20 minutes. Fitter and less chubby people may be quicker

When we were in Lavender Hill we were under Wandsworth which apparently has the lowest council tax and our rent was £930 for a one bed ex-council flat. We're now just over the border and into Lambeth (Clapham) and I pay about £110 in council tax and £1100 a month for a three bed garden flat.

We're really lucky that we've got so much space and pay so little for it. The flat isn't in great condition but I've got a conservatory and a 50(ish) ft garden and space for three bikes and a dining table which is a lot more than most people have and the landlord is reasonably good at getting things fixed.

Look in West London. Shepherds Bush, Acton, Ealing and outwards. The Central line is the best on the network, and the bike journey eastwards is great.

South London has pinched narrow streets, a complete lack of pubs, and very few trees. Also, the locals get pissed up on Friday nights and hassle cyclists.

{heads for door...}

I would definitely be looking towards Battersea / Wandsworth. As mentioned Council tax is super cheap (compared to everywhere else). I was paying half of our £60 per month CT, when i was in a 2 bedroom flat in Clapham Jucntion. I am now paying over 100 quid a month in the borough of Merton and that's with single person discount applied!

What's it like round there, then? Any good/bad bits/roads to look out for?

Must admit I am a little adverse to the idea - mostly because it puts me so far away from friends and family who all live up Barnet, Enfield and Hackney way. And I know next to nothing about the area.

Good position, though.

From east what comes to mind is via Liverpool st or through old street then holborn etc. not too bad

I plan to go. Battersea/Wandsworth, swmbo has highlighted that area away from where we was looking initially. Both near to work for us.

But from east it's not bad

Ideally anything running off of Lavender Hill or any of the roads between Wandsworth Common and Clapham Common. There are a million and one pubs / bars / restaurants in the area and it has great transport links, via Clapham Junction (10 mins to Waterloo or Victoria - trains every 5 mins), the Northern line (if you're over towards Clapham Common) and London overgorund up over the river towards Imperial Wharf and beyond (again from the Junction).

I would probably not have moved away from the area, if I was able to afford a place there by myself. Being only 5 miles from the middle of town makes it very handy.

The Junction side and between the commons seems to be more late twenties - 30 somethings and Clapham proper (up past the tube station and along the High St area) is a slightly younger crowd.

Wandsworth itself can be hit and miss. By Wandsworth town station there are some nice roads, like Alma Rd. There are also some not so nice parts, this can also be said of Battersea - closer to the river, by the high rise type estates.
