Good film scanning software?

I'm going to get a film/slide scanner and will mainly scan colour slides and B&W negatives. I suppose I will one day end up with Photoshop like everybody else. However, in the meantime, is there any suitable software which one can download for nothing and with which one can convert B&W negs into positive images?

That function should be handled by the scanner driver - which will either come with the scanner or be a free download. You tell it what type of film it's scanning (slides, negs, etc) and it'll output apppropriately :-)

Anyway, almost any image software will have an 'invert image' function - inc. free ones such as Irfanview, Gimp etc...

Good suggestion from bikepete - GIMP is free should be able to handle that no problem ...
