Hi

Can you help me out!!

Im looking for somewhere to go for a camping weekend and would just like to have a few ideas from anybody. Im looking for somewhere with good facilities and not too expensive to stay (by this i mean pitch the tent).

Any help?

Give us a clue where you are.

The problem you're going to have here is that people who have discovered great campsites tend to guard them jealously.

I know a couple of good ones in Wales, my favourite is Henstent in Llangynog, great little family run site, only takes 5 or 6 tents right next to the river.

Sandy balls Is pretty good, they have a few corn fields for relaxed camping but also set pitches amongst caravanners. They have swimming pools, health club, pub, restaurant and shops on site and its right on the River Avon. Some cracking rides around the New forest too. http://www.sandy-balls.co.uk/ the pub up the road is called "The Cock" and serves lovely food.

Cocks and Sandy Balls.... I promise I am not making this up!

I love Weymouth...stayed here many a time once

About a mile or three out of town, down a hill and onto the 'farm'. Good facilities, licenced, food if you want it, shop, good shower / toilet facilities last time i was there, quite busy (a bit of a negative, but a good sign) and it borders Chesil Beach.
Downside...Chesil beach (the bit the site borders) is not visually pleasing, but it is wild with nice walks either way.

Weymouth itself ?...i love it. Good mackerel fishing from the harbour / pier, fantastic long beach, quite a nice town centre, good array of shops, the Swannery lakes are nearby, always very relaxed there.
Portland is spectacular to go up, very rugged, beaut views from the top, you can see Weymouth and Chesil beach dissapear into the distance, Verne prison cut into the rocks....etc etc etc.

Rarely had a problem finding parking. Its busy, but once you know where all the car parks are, there's always a space to be found, specially by the harbour.

If it were'nt obvious....i love it

I should say...there may be better places in Weymouth, but i've no complaints about this one...

He's right the Cock pub is just up the road from Sandy Balls Leisure Centre (I think that what it is called) at Godshill on the western edge of the New Forest and if you go down the hill behind the Cock then you come to another pub and a small five van site along side the river (not certain about facilities for this site though) possibly just a water tap and elsan (toilet) emptying point.

Holmsley in the New Forest is a nice basic site. In forest, cycle tracks run next to site to take you out and about and it is also only about five miles from nice beach at mudeford and highcliff.
Site is on an old WW2 airfield and is huge. No set pitches just lots of room and nice tree backed areas to pitch in. It is run by the Forestry Comission. Rates are low (comparatively) and it just has a shop and the fairly standard loo/sink/shower facilities.

Only downside is that it gets really booked up (numbers limited by facilities not space) so you need to book well in advance for busy times.

Dont go to the non forestry commission site next door (also in holmesly)as the owner is a git.
