Good Trails in or around Newcastle?

Getting dragged to my sisters to spend 'family' time over Easter hols!

Want to take my bike too !

Any good XC or DH trails near to Geordieland ?

Any help or advice appreciated

I am used to gisburn type of skill levels

Don't know how far you want to travel from Newcastle, but:

Alllendale is a really nice area to cycle around, Kielder is good for prepared trails, but when they built the reservoir they flooded the picnic area I went to as a kid so I take a personal grudge against it.

Hamsterley forest is closer than Kielder and has plenty of official trails...very scenic on outskirts but some of the easier trails were boring dolomite/gravel paths and very dusty the last time I was there a few years ago...
