You've just got to take the ups and the downs eh?

I walked in the woods with Jack (pic. left) this morning - a one dog crusade against all grey squirrels.
Cut grass and did 'son' things for my Mum...
Replaced the wheels on my bike (lined the tyre printing up with the maker's name on the wheel when replacing tyres = sad ;) ) Replaced the bar tape, all the batteries in the lights (a revolting job) and watched the baby fishes in the pond.
The best part - a dog and a nice day.
The worst - watching that f ing video of that bloke and his mates.

Well, a really good weekend. Went shooting (targets and clays) Saturday on an island. Shot some .303's, Christ I wouldn't like to be a soldier.

Today went for a 42 mile ride in the drizzle and got really cold (no waterproof). The last 8 miles were horrendous but it's a good feeling to finish it.

All topped off with a nice half evening with friends and a nice meal and the kids all playing well together - it doesn't get any better.

Is that expensive Crackle ? I fancy some clay pidgeon shooting for my 50th next year, maybe take some friends and family for some fun.

I don't know. Very luckily, I have a friend who happens to caretake a small Scottish island and shoots. So he took me and the kids and a bunch of guns.

However the island he caretakes has two cottages on it for rent. Totally remote, gas lighting, coal fires, incredibly peacefull. The cottage comes with a boat and I'm pretty sure if you wanted to shoot, fish and sit back and relax, drink beer and have a good old laugh and chinwag (no telly, no electric) you couldn't get better. The shootings not part of the package but I'm sure he could do it, that plus whale watching, fishing and whatever you fancy - good people who run it and do it. If it interests you drop me a pm and I'll send you a link, name and telephone number.

I have done clays in the past and I seem to remember it was about £20 for 20ish shots.

Right, so here sums it up:
Friday, reading and writing essay.
Was looking forward to a drink out with my sister, but she got into an argument with her boyfriend, so I just watched Jonathan Ross and gazed at the Irish one in girls aloud (couldn't understand a word she said mind).
Saturday: finished watching Band of Brothers for about the ten millionth time. Had a little cry. Did some work and then went out to london for my mate's birthday. A nice curry at the Gaylord restaurant was had, but then it took me 3 hours to get home. Waiting an hour and a half in Euston on a Saturday night for a train, when there should have been one at 12.34 - ruddy engineering works. plus side I got some work done and talked to pretty girls.
Today, Sunday lunch with family, essay writing/reading and then back up North and home.
Bike was in manc, and i was in watford, so no cycling for me.

Saturday: Morning, wrote a "Dear John" type letter, which wasn't fun, but had to be done. Afternoon, went to an apple pressing at a friend's house. Lovely couple, bit hippyish, can just about organise themselves out of a paper bag. Mid way through afternoon, with sacks of apples being washed and chopped, the husband said "I wonder if we have enough bottles..." ;) Still, once finished we (about 12 of us) sat round the campfire with sausages and roast veg and had a nice natter, and I brought a jamjar of very nice apple juice home..

Sunday, out for a ride with a couple of friends - not much, just a 10 mile pootle to the pub at Bolton Percy and back. Lovely weather, warm enough (just) to eat lunch outside. Once home, watched the tail end of The Empire Strikes Back on ITV, knitted more of Oli's new cardi, avoided falling into my usual trap of cooking a second dinner (I'm really trying to shift a few pounds), and laughed my head off at Top Gear, then chatted to my sister on the phone for an hour.

Sat - OK - picked up Brommie from the LBS and its loverly now. Nice big front cog. Fireworks with kids in the evening.

Sun - Crap - Had to spend hours with my son on his project 'Life in an Anglo Saxon village'. He can't write because of a broken wrist and he's dictating to me. Who sets a 12 page project for a 7 year old? All the parents agree it's too young and they don't understand what is required of them, so the parents have to spend hours organising and mentoring them. Fortunately we went to West Stow in Suffolk (Anglo Saxon re-eactment) last week which I have to say was really good, so we have some great research material and pictures. I did think of Arch as we went round the archaelogical bits.

Aw...;)

I've not been there - one of those places I mean to get to, but I'm not often in Suffolk. I sort of know the lady who analysed the animal bone from the site - one day I might even get round to co-authoring the article we discussed at a conference, comparing it with a site I analysed here in Yorkshire for my MSc. I'm not an anglo-saxon specialist, but if you have any questions about their livestock, I'll do my best!

Does seem like a lot for a seven year old. 12 pages of text, or can he have pictures etc?
