Good year for plums?

Just spoken with my mum and they've had a plum tree fruit for the first time in the twelve years they've lived there. The fruit are slightly bigger than a cherry, plentiful and good eating apparently.

Just wondering how unusual it is for a tree not to produce fruit for so long and then give forth and if yours are having a good year?

Not got a plum tree but had a cracking year for currants. 22lb of red currants off one bush

Colleague bought a load of cherry plums in yesterday. I hadn't heard of cherry plums before - very tasty.
He said there were loads this year so your good year for plums theory could be correct, longers.

Mum's had a sweet chestnut for years, bought as a twiglet while I still at home, so at least 12 years ago. Last year it had it's first chestnut this year it has about a dozen.

Dunno if that's related at all!

I think we have cherry plums on the reserve, seem to be doing well. And Mum also has a couple of plum tree suckers, doing well this year.

I wouldn't be surpised if it was a good year for fruit, after the proper cold winter. Don't some plants need a cold snap to perform well? (or rather the fruit is a responce to a cold winter...)

Currants berries and plums superb, but it looks like the autumn bliss are going to out do all of them.

I got a reasonable 'crop' of cherries for the first time. About 3kg from a medium sized tree. Tasted good too.

Our plum trees were looking good... 'were' because we've raided them over the last few days and have been making jam etc. The 2 pear trees are looking to produce more fruit than the last few years too, but we need some decent falls of rain. We're hopeful about the apples, they look good but most of last year's crop were had wormy things. Sadly, we lost most of our cherries earlier in the year to mould; we reckon the hot and humid conditions saw to that.

So I'd say, based on our experiences, that it has been a good summer for fruit. My favourite time of year coming up.... I adore squashes!

In another time, I used to make a lot of jam, chutney etc - with the two massive plum trees in the garden bearing loads of fruit. Within a lot of the plums were little pink wriggly things, feasting on fruity goodness.
One minute your plums are bursting with goodness - the next, old and wrinkly!

No. For two years our trees have been so loaded with plums that the branches were hanging down; this year there are very few plums. Cooking apples, on the other hand, are going to be fantastic.

Oddly, our plum tree didn't bear any fruit this year. But then I had a cherry tree bear fruit which it never has before in ten years. My apple and peach trees have done remarkably well and have had no treatment (unusual) for pests so for the first time ever the fruit is wholly organic.

Our plum tree seems to do well every year, bless its little wooden heart. It's an ancient damson - the only trouble we've had this year is that even with a ladder we can't reach the plums at the top

Lots of plums on the trees in my garden. As Baggy says, some are out of reach.

There is a Plum Fayre here later in the month. There will be lots of tarts, and men who have their plums on display.

A few years ago uor 2 Victoria plums trees had so much fruit we could keep up, so we played cricket with the fruit and made a wonderful mess. There seems to be loads of blackberries this year. Bring out the white T-shirts!!

Not necessarily that unusual. Depends on age and pruning, amongst other factors.

No plums but has been a great year for cherries and loganberries while apples, crab apples and blackberries are looking good.
