They didn't hack into other people's networks. It was more a complete capture of all the wireless data packets passing the aerial. More like trawling than rod fishing.

Whether that's any more or less sinister I'll leave to you
I didn't read that with a massive feeling of relief actually.

Google now own Boston Dynamics. Who made this scary mofo.
However, i have had a google account for years now, no probs. Great for contacts across devices, Android apps and so on.

If Google want to know what you are doing, or send you spam, or do anything nasty to you, they will. They don't need you to have an account with them.

With billions of people using their accounts, OS, apps and pages I really don't think you will stand out in any way, shape or form.

GCHQ and the US NSA know everything you are doing, they are harvesting the data from computers, wifi, phones and all. It is estimated 70% of the world data traffic is compromised. Companies (software AND your phone company) have granted back backdoor access into their software to these 'snoopers', for cash of course
I use Google for everything...
Who cares as they probably already know what I do...

So much of the data traffic on the internet now passes across either a Google line or a limited number of other servers that whatever account you have is as visible as a Google account. I can't remember how many years ago it was but there was a fire in an anonynous block at Canary Wharf in London. It was only then that people realised that about 50% of the UK's internet trafficw went through that building. ( I believe it's been made more resilient now)

The only problem with getting a Gmail account now is that the chances of getting the one you want are slim and you'll have to put up with numbers in it. Those of us in there when they started got to have proper email addresses.

About 8 years ago i suggested on a forum that one day Google would become Skynet... oh how they laughed at me!

Wonder if 'they' remembered when Google bought the robotics company??? Laughing on the other side of their faces now.

They said that nobody would be prepared to pay for content or web sites either. And yet, everyone I know pays for mobile apps.

It will never fly. First, you would need a whole separate internet if you want to avoid your usage data being monetised. Second, no-one will be prepared to pay for it, just as no-one in the UK is prepared to pay for current account banking or independent financial advice.

That's the spirit...

The crowdfunding model should make you sceptical. That usually means that only the credulous or ignorant are prepared to put up any money. Feel free to join them - I'm happy to let Google wrestle with the challenge of making a penny out of me.

I've met the guy who started the project, Aral Balkan. He is genuine and sincere; more importantly he's trying to make a difference and not looking to fleece anyone.

I suppose time will tell if what he's started succeeds and remains true to its values. I hope so.

Can't do.. he's an idealistic dreamer who needs top understand that people choose to give up privacy easily, they give it up for Tesco club cards and discount online shopping, cash back and so much more. He needs to appeal to more than the average geek nutter like myself who encrypts hard disks, and runs proxys due to privacy concerns. He needs to appeal to the wider population who do not care about privacy enough to read things like facebooks EULA

This idea offers the user nothing at all over any other Open Source phone Operating Systems
Android, Linux, Ubuntu Touch and FirefoxOS are all open source.. and all three products are supported by big business,

He is having a giggle, the best hes going to get is become some hacky android rom for rooted phones.

That's a bit unfair. Many people have no conception that by having a Clubcard, Tesco are actually tracking all their purchases and more. They haven't chosen to give up privacy, they haven't been adequately informed of what they are doing. If they were I imagine it would cost Tesco more to get people to use the Clubcard. And yes I know that there will be a document detailing exactly that when you sign up for a Clubcard but as you've noted with reference to the EULA, it needs to be more in your face to inform people.
