I was just asked if I could remember when 1471 or 'last number redial' first appeared in the UK.
I'm not sure if I have hazy recognition of it being in the mid '90's?

I can't find any mention on 'Tinterweb and I'm running out of search ideas.

I'm sure someone on here will know.

Worked for BT at the time. i would hazard a guess at 1993/94

Was tested in some exchange areas first though.

I think it would be 1995 for the 1471 thingy. I could explain how I remember that, but not going to.

Last number redial would be before that.

Last number redial is a totally different thing and is based purely on what type of phone you had

No it wasn't.

1471 then 3 is just a call to the number that had called. Effectively like just picking up the dialling it. BT never gave free calls. The actual physical dialling of 1471 the 3 if you wanted to return the call is free. It's just the call you get charged for

That's because of the exchange you were on. All the outstick places were converted last. Thought they would have done them all before then though!!
