In google maps is there a way to turn off all those things like Dovecote Inn, Teddies Nursery etc so that I've got the map rather than things people are trying to promote.

hover over the 'map' link in the top right and untick the 'show labels' box

Hmm but that gets rid of the road names as well which I do want - I just want to get rid of the nurseries, pubs, vets etc that are starting to clutter up the maps.

ah, sorry, no you can't get rid of those.
actually my previous advice of turning show labels off only applies to satellite mode. Your indication that this has an effect suggests you are using satellite mode - is that the case?
Map mode is clearer for most things, but you can't change the rendering of labels. It automatically removes less significant ones as you zoom out, which is what prevents it being too cluttered.

Thanks I flick between both satellite and normal map, but find those other things irritating - if I wanted to know where the vets was I would search for them myself. Never mind looks as if I will just have to ignore them.

Install Google earth instead.... I believe you can tun off most labels and still keep the road names.
