The newspapers, etc will already have their obituaries and supplements prepared in advance.
Of course, the BBC have constantly updated packages that they can put on air immediately, not just for the Royal family but polititians and certain celebrities too. See what happens when Bruce Forsyth dies, he has been frail for a while and his end is expected, there will be a recorded piece on the news channel as soon as his death is announced, and a tribute programme for BBC1 available for broadcast the same day if needed.

Doing a bit of historical investigation, it seems monarchs generally don't last forever.

I was surprised to learn this too. Though it seems that recently they've died of natural causes, rather than the more traditional axe blow/sword strike/poisoning more popular earlier in our history.

These can go badly wrong. Apparently CNN put this on their website last year:

One Castro or another has ruled Cuba over a period that spans seven decades and 11 U.S. presidents. Fidel Castro outlived six of those presidents, [[[NOTE: change to seven if George H.W. Bush dies before Castro]]] including Cold War warriors John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan.

Well, natural-ish causes

http://www.nytimes.com/1986/11/28/world/1936-secret-is-out-doctor-sped-george-v-s-death.html

As he lay comatose on his deathbed in 1936, King George V was injected with fatal doses of morphine and cocaine to assure him a painless death in time, according to his physician's notes, for the announcement to be carried ''in the morning papers rather than the less appropriate evening journals.''

As Betty has been in charge so long, I think 1936 counts as "recent" for these purposes.
