Early example of the current war on truth, from the Australian Republican referendum in '99. The change was basically doing a global search and replace on the constitution, replacing "Queen" with "President". The president was to be appointed by a 2/3rd majority of the parliament, which meant that it had to be a compromise that both major parties could agree on.
The monarchists were sneaky. They didn't campaign to keep the Queen - they knew most Australians were republicans. So their campaign was describing this solution as the "politician's president" and that what we wanted was a people's president, elected by the popular vote.
