Without looking, I seem to recall....it loses the following over the Hero4
- No screen
- No Wifi
- No Bluetooth

I recall seeing this article...Bikeradar

"So, what are we missing out on with this one? Well, there's none of this Ultra HD 4k stuff going on here and there's no fancy screen to review your footage. You won't find WiFi or Bluetooth functionality either, but for a lot of people that won't be an issue.

What may be more of an issue is the fact that the camera appears to be integrated into its housing, so you'll want to look after that lens. Unlike GoPro's other cameras, the HERO's battery is built-in, so you lose some convenience too."

There is a youtube video on it:

As stated above, it lacks the fancy features like wifi but camerawise, the main difference is it will only operate at 1080 pixels at 30 frames per second. This is still a great resolution and 30 fps is fast enough for most sports but if you need very fast action, say 60 frames per second, the resolution drops to 720 pixels. The GoPro 3 for example records at 960 pixels for 60 fps and the hero 4 silver at: 1080p at 60 fps or 720p at 120 fps.

It's only going to make a difference if you are seriously into action footage and require ultra high definition at speed. If you don't really know what you are wanting to do with it but fancy having a go, it's a bargain price. It's better than aldi's camera which is darker and drops frames in comparison:

There is another camera, the Eyeshot HD Action Camera which has a wrist watch remote control with remote viewing, in case you use the camera as a helmet camera. There's a link at the end of the video above.

However, I have been in the IT industry since the 1970s and it is very easy to get sucked in by features. I was one of those in marketing when the term 'Paperless Office' was banded around. I have bought more printers than any other computer component. My best photos were on the cheapest cameras and my best illustrations were in Corel Draw version 1 and I still use Photoshop version 5. I took the time to learn how to do these things but found when there were loads of features, it became too much trouble to learn about the product.

Don't get sucked in by features. Learn how to use the simple products.

Thanks for your comments all.

Think I'll buy one and report back...need to check that it comes with a helmet mount!

Michael Schumacher's wife is reporting the helmet mounted go-pro might have contributed to his injuries. If I get one I will probably go chest or bike mounted. Of course, if you don't actually wear a helmet that would make sense.

Specs say...

  • Integrated Camera + Housing
  • Built-In Battery
  • Skeleton Backdoor
  • Curved Adhesive Mount
  • Flat Adhesive Mount
  • Quick Release Buckle
  • USB Cable

I don't see helmet mount, but I may be wrong

It will be removable from the housing just like the others, don't worry. Essentially it's the original HD Hero (that I have) but smaller, lighter and improved sensor and low light performance.

It doesn't come with a vented helmet mount, but there is one available separately. It will have a couple of adhesive mounts for flat and curved surfaces though, they would stick onto a smooth hardshell helmet.

I usually use a K-Edge handlebar mount for mine. I'm not keen on helmet mounting, I can feel the weight up there which is less comfy and it wobbles a bit no matter how tight you get things.

This is not proven as yet.

There is a lot of retraction of som earlier statements on this matter

In theory the GoPro mount fails and the camera falls away so there is no proof either way as yet

Thanks again all.

Got one from Argos at the weekend...stupidly forgot about an memory card for it, so won't be able to use it until my micro SD arrives from amazon, which will be tomorrow.

Will report back with results.
