Halfords have 10% off this weekend and if you take your BC membership in you can get it for about £81. Hmmm.

Thanks for that tip, I ordered one from the website where they applied the discount automatically.

I remembered to get a memory card too!

Finally used it for the first time yesterday.

First impressions good - quality of video is very good, nice wide angled shot.

It did freeze and skip a few times over the course of my hour ride when watching it back - not sure if this is an issue with the camera, the memory card, or the media player on my laptop.

Will keep an eye on it.

All in all, good for £100.

Ok - used for the first time in the dark tonight; as I expected, it doesn't pick up a great deal where the streets are not well lit.

Where there are lots of street lamps, you can make out everything such as cars, bikes, people etc, but the street lamps tend to make it slightly blurry IMO - the daytime resolution/image quality was good, as expected, not much use in the dark!

Thanks for that report, I'm sorely tempted but I must admit the lack of low level light quality may be a bit of an issue.
Sorry to sidetrack slightly, but are the later models any better in low light, or is this just a feature of anything with so small an aperture?

I'd be curious to know as well, actually - I'm sure the ones that are £300+ must be better in low light, but assume they would need some sort of backlight/flash to work in the dark, no?

They would need some sort of light source, I'm interested to know whether a low powered bike light or just street lighting gives enough light to capture details really. I guess it's down to the size of the pixels on the sensor, or how sensitive it is?
Apologies though, I think I might have missed the most relevant part of your post! You say that as long as there are enough streetlights etc, you can make out everything. Is that in enough detail in your opinion? (to record an incident for example)

The problem of having a built in battery would prevent me from buying it - the battery life on my hero2 isn't great so at least I have the option of swapping the battery out if on a long ride etc.

Just as an aside the guy that started GoPro was talking on the World Service the other day. He started by assembling them in his dad's garage and it grew from there. Later there was a public floatation and now the company is valued at $10 Billion!

This is something I was going to post by way of an update.

Battery retention is pretty appalling on the GoPro Hero; what I mean by that is that when it's running/recording, it's fine, happily copes with a couple of hours filming.

But, leave it overnight (off) and by the morning it's completely gone, even if it has been charged.

So, that would be a big consideration in me buying one again...
