Saw on the BBC News this a.m. :-

Yer average Joe managed to keep 64.1p in every £1 earned, after taxes, in the tax year 2005/2006.

Yer average Joe managed to keep 62p in every £1 earned, after taxes, in the tax year 2006/2007.

Predictions are that yer average Joe will keep even less of his / her hard earned dosh in the tax year 2007/2008.

It's based on (if I heard correctly) the amount of taxes from earnings i.e. income tax (don't know about N.I.C. as that's not a tax, Ho! Ho!) and anything that is used to work out the rate of inflation, so I wouldn't think airlines came into it, but then, what do I know.

If you take into account petrol, beer, cigs, VAT etc. the total will be closer to 50p in the pound.
