Purveyor of fine nonsense
I wonder if someone here who is local to Gosport might be able to advise regarding a little oddity I noticed the other day on my evening circuit!
Browndown rd, which runs from Gosport to Lee on Solent is closed for major works. The whole thing is dug up, so they've had to close the footpath too.
The alternative route is not a problem, it's no more than a mile longer, if that.
BUT ... (here's the oddity!) ... if you approach the closed road along the seafront going from East to West (i.e. from Gosport to Lee), the diversion is very well signposted. If you approach from the other direction (Lee to Gosport), it just says "road closed", but there are no "diversion" signs. Nothing. Nada.
I was cycling West to East the other night and I came accross a campervan which was sitting in the entrance to Browndown Rd, with the driver looking completely bewildered! I stopped and asked if he was lost, he replied that he was on holiday in the area, wanted to get to Gosport, had been told to go down Browndown Rd, but when he found the road closed without any diversion signs he was well and truly stumped.
Add to that, the diversion is easy to find if you know where you're going, but it's not clear at all just by reading the signposts - you have to go up into Gosport a little way, and round a couple of roundabouts - you could easily get very lost not half a mile from where you need to be.
So ... I wonder why the diversion is signposted from Gosport to Lee, but not in the other direction!
