Also *never ever* apologise at the beginning of a presentation...
Unless it's to tell them what you're not going to say. I was making a presentation under a rather ambiguous title at a conference and when I got there the audience was way bigger than I was expecting. I wondered if half the audience had 'misinterpreted' the talk title. So it gave me a chance to say 'sorry I won't be talking about X so those who came to listen to X rather than Y have an opportunity to leave now..' I don't usually start with anything jokey but that did seem to go down well and no one left.
