My advice is never walk up hills no matter what time !
If your knackered stop and mess with something and then carry on !!

Used that trick before - maybe I wasn't as subtle as I thought. Last time I did another cyclist went by and said "Yeah mate, I hate this hill too." ;)

I used to have a bike with no gears one gear. If I saw a hill, I'd speed up before I got to it and just about make it over!;) Used it in Reddish Vale Country Park too and beat my fastest time to get to Stockport town centre from Salford on it: half an hour (with a five minute rest at the bus stop, so technically 25 minutes). Not great, but it was way faster than I'd ever been before.
I thought it would be awful going up hills, but it wasn't actually too bad.

Or select a lower gear from the ample range fitted to your bike and spin your way up! I'm assuming that people know their limitations and choose appropriate gearing for their bikes.

Perhaps there is some excuse for walking on gradients above 20%, or if you have a 30 mph headwind, but otherwise if you have to get off and walk, your bike is overgeared and/or you are dehydrated and/or hungry and/or you have severely exceeded your maximum range.

I love this time of year - as I have my face covered, I can get up the hills as no one can really see my bright red face when I get to the top, nor can they see my grimace of pain or hear me huffing and puffing like an old steam train;)
