My view on Garmin (having been through several over the years) is they make good hardware but their software (GPS device, web, etc.) is pretty poor.
Each time I need to change device (typically when batteries lose capacity) I want to search round for alternatives but I tend to leave it too late before needing it so end-up getting what I know.
Apart for buggy, one aspect I intensely dislike about Garmin software is that they don't provide flexibility, you operate the device the way they want you to operate it, your wishes irrelevant.
eg When they want to update the firmware on
your device (that you paid for outright, cash, etc.) they all but force the update (select "Later" and suddenly next day you'll find it updating without having asked again!). For me this all but forcing updates it unbelievably bad as 1) they have pushed out a 1050 update that bricked a significant number of devices and on others cause massive loss of functionality. 2) I never update any software close to or during a tour due to the risk of introduced bugs (see point 1).
They'll introduce a "feature" they like and thus you must have without realising the impact it can have eg they introduced a double screen tap to sound a loud "bell". But my riding position is such that wearing a waterproof it's flapping around keeps sounding this "bell" yet Garmin provide no option to disable the feature (you use
your device they way they want you to).
