A rather pathetic 9 I'm afraid.

Maybe 20 years back I may have fared better - all those lost grey cells............

12 (with a little help from google ). That stuff is for 11 year olds? Surely not! I don't remember doing anything as complicated as that, and I did SCE Higher level English (somewhere between GCE O and A level). Then again, it was 35 years ago, so none of that stuff had been invented.

10. Wot is a gerund?

Wikipedia doesn't help Quote:-
"In Latin and English grammar, the gerund is a non-finite verb form used to make a verb phrase that can serve in place of a noun phrase. The English gerund ends in -ing (as in I enjoy playing football); the same verb form also serves as the English present participle (which has an adjectival or adverbial function), and as a verbal noun."

Yes, I learned that distinction a couple of years ago at a Latin class.
The Italian gerund is something different, ie: (while) I was playing football (... )

10 for me - I was sure of some of them, but others I had to just guess and hope for the best.
All very disheartening for me, there was only one question (no2) that I confidently got right. I didn't learn to read and write until later in life, in fact, as recent as 10 years ago I would not have been able to participate in this forum as I was incapable of articulating my thoughts into the written word. I sometimes kid myself now that I have cracked it, but then a little quiz like that shows I no bollocks all:sad:
What's to be disheartened about? All that shows is that you don't need to know rules to be able to write perfectly good English.Which you obviously can. Like I said above, writing has been my livelihood for thirty some years, and 'knowing the rules' has never come into it. You learn to write by reading and by writing, not by learning rules.

8/14 for my.
Grammar was never my favourite subject at skool.
same score here, I fell down on what were subordinate clauses , main clauses etc. I haven't a foggiest what they are called and have no need.

Child of the seventies state schooling system so not taught the names for different parts of sentences. We learned when and where to use a comma. Wifey was the same but her dad was old school headteacher so taught his kids what they were.

just because a child doesn't know what a subordinate clause is doesn't mean they have no comprehension of correct grammar.
