If I was relying only on my primary & secondary education then I reckon I'd have scored no more than 5.

Agree - most, if not all of that, I hadn't learnt.

I got 10, with educated guesses.

Ah, that quiz took me back to my english lessons of old...oh no! It didn't: We never did stuff like that. I remember being a bit incredulous that some poet actually meant all the stuff we were inferring but grammar in a Grammar, no.

Anyway, 10 because I'm good at guessing obscure crap that no one needs to know.

My Grammar school didn't do grammar as far back as the late 60s.

I believe the teaching of grammar (to the level questioned in the quiz) used to happen at state schools but got phased out at some stage in the past (maybe as far back as the 60s).

I'm impressed by the scores people got in honesty. Even if you did learn this stuff at school, it's surprising you remember it. Unless you work in some kind of related job, or have learned another language, then there's little reason to know it.

I'm pleased you get it Pat. The "ing" bit I get but the rest of the words in that Wikipedia quote go straight over my head. I think I've seen all the words it's just the way they've been put together I'm having trouble with.

Nae worries: I speak several languages, but cannot sum 2 pus 2.
Also I'm having troubles using mini pumps and pressure gauges

The only reason I got that one right was because I'd already seen it mentioned on this thread.

I'm surprised that this formal approach to a first language is used in schools. In most cases, it's only useful for learning a second (or third in Pat's case) language.

Analyzing of the sentence was a compulsory subject at secondary school for us (in Italy).

I think a lot of the trouble is that the technical stuff isn't explained and related to English. When attempting to learn French the teachers would come out with that stuff. It meant nothing as the French wasn't at all familiar anyway. If I'd understood the technical English then I may have been able to grasp a foreign language. On the plus side I still pigeon French on my hols 40+ years later :-)

I'm a sub. I got 13/14. I found it all too easy, hence got complacent and allowed myself to be caught out by "pride". Annoying.

Degree in English from QUB and ditto. I have been taught very little grammar at any stage
