the joy of multiple choice.

Too true. Process of elimination (and illumination too) sometimes. 'Eliminate the impossible and whatever is left must be the truth' ... to paraphrase numerous folk!

I reckon compilers of multi-choice answers have a laugh by putting in one utterly ridiculous answer - just to see if anyone will pick it!

I remember one army test where a possible definition of "parbuckling" was "the use of a felling axe as an offensive weapon". Every time I marked that test at least one joker chose that answer. (It's rolling a log uphill with ropes.)

For some reason that reminds me of something I read, must be getting on for 40 years ago, in David Niven's autobiography, where he describes completing his officer training course, and finishing off the form by answering the question about 'are there any regiments you would particularly like to be attached to?' with the carefree jocularity of youth: 'Anyone but the Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders'. As he put it: 'Someone at the War Offive clearly had a better sense of humour than me. Very soon I received my first posting - to the Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders.'

So what is the word for 'use of a felling axe as an offensive weapon"?

I'd have thought that was more useful to know in the army. After all if your mate wants to warn you about this nutter 'Look out he's about use a felling axe as an offensive weapon' is a bit long-winded. Whereas rolling a log up hill with ropes is something you can take your time over.
