A friend of mine has invited me to go to gran canaria with him... but other than look at sand and drink beer, I'm not sure what there is to do there. He's not a cyclist so spending a week touring the island is out.

My last holiday was in new york, plenty to do there. The one before that was Turkey and there's plenty of ancient ruined cities which i thoroughly enjoyed (plus an eclipse of the sun).

so my question is... what is there to do on the south side of Gran Canaria?

Spending a week drinking and looking at sand isn't really selling it to me.

I have to be honest. The south is a cattle market. It gets worse or better depending where you go. I went on a stag do there 2 years ago and it was just horrible. But I'm not a party animal!

My Mum and Dad live there. They are 69 years old and enjoy line dancing, Dominoes, boat trips, meals out and sunshine. They went primarily for the sunshine so....just assume it's a bit like Salford, but with sunshine. Sounds shoot doesn't it ?

That's a great pity. I read on here someone's report of a ride around the island, so off I went. Just over 115 miles, amazing sea cliff scenery along the west coast, lots and lots of climbing and still one of the best days' riding I've ever had anywhere. There are also brilliant but shorter rides up to 6400' Pico de los Nieves and back.

I believe there is a good range of rock climbing higher up. There is certainly lots of stunning walking - a few links here. http://www.islandwalking.com/grancanaria.html

I know most people just go to Maspalomas etc - in which case you might just as well get off your face on lager and lie on a sunbed at home - but Gran Canaria is a top destination for all sorts of more worthwhile activities.
