The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
"Granny Gear
Slang term for the smallest chainwheel on a triple crank set.
Note that this term is not a general term for the lowest gear of a bicycle, but specifically refers to just the smallest chainwheel on a crankset with more than two chainwheels."

My granny is 22 and she saves me walking or pushing as in my case
Mine too. It means that hills like this are rideable, albeit not very fast: Link

My son’s Granny was riding a 40” low tourer when she was 74. It was a 38 x 25. Some men?? too young to buy a drink in a pub can’t ride up a 12% without a gear lower than this.

Maybe we should rename the small ring of a triple, the ‘Wet behind the ears whippersnapper weakling’ gear?

One of my old partners:

"WTF? You soft soppy bollix! Granny gear is NOT your friend!"

That runs through my head anytime I "accidentally" slip into the 22.

maybe you shouldn't make assumptions on why people need a granny ring

Seeings as the General Issue adult human being has 32 teeth in their gob, less than 32 constitutes what superannuated euthanasia candidates folks might have.

If you say so ;), but that kind of bravado didn't help the 500-odd riders who ended up pushing their bikes up Asterton Bank on the first ever Ride Across Britain.
