Great LBS experience today - pic added by request

Me and my my Trek 5200 US Postal livery (those were the days!) bike have been commuting since June this year, and after 3200 miles there were a few problms ..

Brown chocolate fluid was coming from the bottom of the head stem and down all over the forks every time it rained, wheels were slightly out of true, and she was looking a bit worn out.

I took the bike to Ben Haywards in Cambridge, but they have opened a sister shop which is out of Cambridge and therfore you can get to it with a car !, I had the day off so dropped it in.

When I got there they were really friendly, I explained the problem with the head and they thought as I did that it was the bearings, and they said they might not be able to get the S2 Cane Creek bearing till next week, but the man in the shop said he was going somewhere and would try and get it today. Fair enough I thought as I was not expecting it back till early next week.

They said the chain was worn out and I would need a new cassette, which I kind of expected the bike is 7 years old and I must have done at least 7,000 miles in those 7 years.

Got a call at 11.00 which I missed, but I rang back expecting the worse, but they said it was all ready and all fixed, so was able to drive back back on my way home and pick it up.

A nice chat with them, they showed me the bearings which were worn out !, so I had a service, new brake blocks all round, new Shimano Ultegra cassette and chain, plus new bearings for the steering. Wheels are true again too !

So I am on holiday the rest of the week, and the bike is ready too.

Overall I was very impressed with their attitude, and the service. I had bought 2 bikes from them before, both Trek, but never used this new shop or for a service, and i was well chuffed.

Wiggle also delivered my new Gator tyres yesterday, plus my new front light.

Its all go for a winter of commuting on the bike ! Hope to get to 4,000 miles by the end of the year.

Cheers folks.

When you find a good shop use it! There seem to be more bad shops than good shops!

Do yourself a favour and buy a chain checker about £5 from dotbike, I never have to replace a cassette or sprocket besause of this little device. Just have to change the chain.
With a little practice servicing a headset is relatively simple [and in winter the front mudguard will stop all the spray and salt that comes with it from getting in to the bearings] as is truing a wheel. I know Ben Haywards well, or used to when I lived there and although good, they were not the exactly cheap.
BTW where is the new shop?

I am definately, the one thing I have learned since joining here is that I thought I knew a lot about cycling, used to be a club cyclist for a while, but commuting by bike every day is a whole different ball game.

Bike takes so much more hammer than a weekend club run, and so I am learning all these things, made some rookie mistakes because I have not experienced things, like wrong tyres for winter, bought a poor front light, rain proof jacket thats not reflective in the dark, but we learn by doing !
