Started cycling via greenwich foot tunnel a couple of weeks ago instead of getting the ferry from rotherhithe, as I can cope with the extra mileage now I'm a bit fitter and it saves a little dough. Anyway yesterday morning and this morning the lift had broken so I had to get the ferry from greenwich. Told this German guy at work. His response: "you mean zey only have von lift?"

ferry company makes a killing when this happens! And today I missed a ferry by about 30 secs and had to wait 20 mins for the next one

Oh and yesterday I had a visit from the P-fairy on the way home aswell! Musnt grumble really though as apart from this little rough patch in the last few days the cycle commute has been going very well -- maybe I'll switch back to the old route though

If you're super fit you can carry the bike down/up the spiral staircase. Takes a while though.

The lift is not broken. It's ongoing refurbishment and replacement works.
People are lucky it is still open during the works as the initial plan was for Greenwich council to completely shut the tunnel for 10months.

The Hilton to Canary Wharf ferry costs £2.90 on Oyster. Well worth the cost to cut out Jaimaca Road/ Tower Bridge/The Highway death run.

The stairs are closed at the mo.

Why pay for the ferry, just cycle the c.2 miles to Woolwich and get the free ferry.

There isn't a safe road ride from North Woolwich to Canary Wharf - that's why.

Tunnel was closed again tonight as lift broken again

So about 20 of us went by Thames Clipper from Masthouse to Greenwich.
Boat was pulling in as we arrived.
Thames Clippers very kindly did not charge, simply because there is not enough time to get money of 20 people in the 3 mins it takes to do the crossing

Hi all,

Sorry for ressurecting an old thread. I've just had a bit of conflicting information about the tunnel. I just rang the council who say that they "think" the stairs are open at the moment and I'd be welcome to carry my bike but a colleage has told me he thinks the stairsa re still closed. Normally, I suppose I would trust the council but they seemed rather unsure about the information.

Has anyone here used the tunnel in the last few days? If so, were they allowing bikes?

Cheers,

Ed
