From what has been reported to us (both Lewisham and Greenwich Cyclists) is that the tunnel is accessible but by stairs only (the lift is being replaced). We have our monthly meeting this evening so if I get any details will let you know. To be honest the situation is changing from day to day and Greenwich Council and the contractors have f*cked us over on this one, they can decide at the last minute to shut the tunnel.

I think this thread will be up and down for a while. (pun intended)

Last week the tunnel was closed all week

This week the tunnel is open for all, the lifts at both ends are closed, but if you are fit enough you can carry you bike up and down.

I spoke to Andre the Hungarian lift operator on Monday, he seems to have been given a new job of building site security.
He says the lifts will not be open again until August.

Alternate crossings:

Local:
Thames Clippers will take bikes at a cost of £3.50 with an Oyster from the pier by the tunnel
* DLR will not take bikes under any conditions

3 miles downstream
* Woolwich tunnel is also closed for many months.
Woolwich Ferry is open 7am/7pm but not in fog (such as today)

2 miles upstream
Hiton Hotel ferry will take bikes, cost £2.50 with an oyster
Roterhithe tunnel - It is legally cyclable, however for the very experienced only!

4 Miles upstream
Tower bridge, however not recommended for cyclists
London Bridge, better crossing

When I lived in Hackney and my 'bird' (for I think that's the local terminology for a lady friend) lived in Blackheath I used to ride down those stairs on an almost daily basis.

I just wandered down to the Greenwich tunnel entrance - the Navy's just parked a big boat in the Thames and they're playing silly bulwarks with their helicopters - and, though the lift is boarded up, the stairs are open. Note though, that the tunnel is now closing overnight on weekdays - from 21:00 to 06:00.

I commute from S. London to Canary Wharf so I take the tunnel if its feasible but get the ferry at the hilton otherwise. Last month the tunnel was closed so much I got the ferry. A one month pass is sixty-something pounds. This month I also got a pass because I didnt fancy using the tunnel without a lift; I wreckon my shoulder/body would be a bit shagged using the stairs every day.

Looks like I'll be forking out for the ferry pass for another few months

Great bit of planning on the councils part close both foot tunnels at the same time and is says on the website they took this decesion after consultation with cyclists and traders nice
