The Govt. have given Greenwich council £11.5M to spunk away on "tunnel improvements" for the 2012 Games. Clearly the majority of this cash will be trousered by the contractors, and the rest will be spent on a cosmetic make over to impress the IOC tossers. There is bugger all information on the very poor Greenwich Council website, so I am guessing those incompetent wassocks will close both tunnels simultaneously for the next 18 months. This leads me to wondering how I will get in to work from Lewisham to Canary Wharf, anyone know of a safe route? I don't fancy cycling through the Rotherhithe tunnel.

Cheers.

The Woolwich Ferry is a relaxing alternative.

I actually rang Greenwich Council a month or so ago and asked the same question. Their answer was that they will not be starting the work before September, and when they know of a date will give at least 3 months warning to the community. The lifts will be out of action for a year from when the work starts which means you will have to carry your bike up and down stairs, but they are still to decide whether they will have to close the the tunnels totally during the rest of the refurbishment or can do most of the work at night or with as little disruption to the throughfare as possible.

So I wouldn't worry about it for at least another 5 or 6 months.

They should have built a brand new wide tunnel with no lifts instead of that useless Millenium Bridge which is of no use to man nor beast.

Good point well put Watt-O.

Would be nice to have a cycle friendly tunnel with no lifts....you'd think for 11.5m we'd get a brand-bl**dy-new tunnel!

And really, how much better is it going to look after this facelift??? Still be the same size with a bleedin' lift/steps at both ends...... Great!

Local cycle group is trying to see if they can get the DLR to take bikes between Greewich and Mudchute.

I can't see the DLR going along with that unfortunatly

Someone had a similar problem before. If you take the Hilton ferry that crosses the Thames between......you guessed it The Hilton Hotel in Rotherhithe to Canary Wharf i.e. where the Clipper stops. Last time I went on it they didn't mind taking the bike and it’s usually practically empty. If you don't mind paying £2. If you work in Canary Wharf it'll be ideal as the hard part would be getting to Rotherhithe.

Naturally, you're joking.

You can cross over on the clipper.

A waste of time and money. Okay for a Sunday afternoon jaunt, but not a practical commuting option, User.

Now you're talking!

If I can get one of those, and keep it moored at Rotherhithe, I'll have to beat off the women with a shitty stick! Thanks mr_cellophane!

I quite like the Rotherithe tunnel, got to hold your breath though....

Woolwich Ferry is nice, but a long way out of the way....

Taking the biscuit
the Rotherhithe Tunnle is foul, more so in rush hour.
Personally, I'd avoid it.

It's such a shame Bozo canned the ideas for a pedestrian/cycle bridge from Rotherhithe to Limehouse.

Ok so the plans weren't brilliant but it's the fact he shelved the whole idea.
