:welcome: hello from Republic of Liverpool.
When I got back into cycling (I'm 50) I just got an old hard tail mountain bike for next to nothing on Gumtree.
1. No gobshite gonna want to nick it.
2. Bulletproof, can bounce off most potholes and kerbs.
3. Cheap! Gets you cycling and then you can decide what type of bike is best if you carry on, saves making expensive mistake initially.

I ended up doing my first 50 mile charity ride on it...realised how bloody heavy it was!
