Not sure if the gritters were out in Swindon for very long, as I had to cycle past a car that had apparently skidded on some ice into a nice big kerb, leaving it side on blocking a main road but could not be pushed out of the way.

Thinking about it, I'll probably bus it. It's not so much the cold that I mind (assuming it's not wet / icy as well, in which case all bets are off) as the vehicle drivers who haven't bothered to clear their windows properly. Saw several of those this morning and it was only -3C.

Took the MTB with spikey tyres.

Flaming traffic................. was held up for a couple of minutes by a horse, the stress........ Had to wait for a wide passing point on the Trans Pennine Trail...... that and people walking to work, god, do I have to share the path with 4 other folk............

Airzound :-)

What studded tyres are you using mate ?

Rode through Nottingham at 6.30 and what a lovely morning. No wind kept the chill factor down...snow & sub zero temps forecast for friday night and the weekend though, so will re-evaluate my options on sunday

Schwalbe Snow Studs... they are a medium spike count tyre.

It's a proper MTB off road tyre , but has the studs on the outer knobbles. Running at about 30 PSI, the tread compresses and the studs come into contact with the ground. If you ran at max pressure they wouldn't touch the surface, unless cornering. You can get some insanely spiked tyres, but you need a mortgage for those.

I used them last winter and they were great, especially in that two weeks after the snow fall where I was riding on compacted snow and ice.

What are the roads like round Stockport Fossy? Getting a bit worried about riding the Secteur at the minute.
Hybrid ready to go but no spikey tyres just M+.

Glad I had my Marathon Winters on this morning instead of the M+'s, the main ice problem being mains water escaping and then freezing due to the temperature being -1 when I left home.

I see Wiltshire are to get the sugar coated salt  ..according to this BBC report...
http://news.bbc.co.uk/local/wiltshire/hi/people_and_places/newsid_9185000/9185244.stm

I saw they're looking into it more locally to me as well. The first thing i thought was...bugger, its going to stick like sh*t to a blanket to your bike and cars. I wonder if that'll cause problems, although i see they state its 90% less corrosive. Still...you'll be able to lick yer bike clean instead

I hopefully the experiment works, although I would have thought sugar would be more expensive than rock salt.
Why cannot we just have under-road heating?

It was nice to see at lunchtime the gritters had been out at this morning after the rush hour and not before .

Today's was a very pleasant ride in, beautiful and clear, only -3C when I left and up to about -2C when I got to work. Ground was nice and hard offroad again, but my back tyre was a little low and it took me about an extra 5 mins to get in

Pumped up for the ride home, they have forecast snow for tonight and have warned people to bring overnight bags into work tomorrow in case the weather gets worse, I think I will put my nobblies on tonight and bike it in. Snow sounds fun to ride in
