What happened today? Normally I complete my cycling with few, if none, incidents. And normally very few that prompt me to start a new thread. But what was going on today?

I got left hooked several times. Nothing really bad until I was on Stratford "high street" where a car moved across two lanes to take the road for Westfield at the last moment as I was crossing the junction. He/She almost certainly didn't even see me and was down the road by the time I had wobbled into the curb and half fallen of the cycle. Utter cockwombleness of an order that is rarely seen. The champions league of cockwombleness if you will.

I had cars driving right at me on the wrong side of the road, I had a car zoom up to the back of me and then hang off my back wheel - even though there were two lanes and nothing in the other lane. I had a taxi buzz me in the bus lane even though the main road was clear.

And then the number of people engrossed in their smartphones was just extraordinary. One woman was next to me as I watched in disbelief. She was driving whilst holding - and staring fixedly at - the Iphone - which she was using as a sat nav. For the love of God, an iphone holder thingy is £9. What thought process thinks "no let's save £9 and hold the Iphone whilst driving at 30mph". People like this shouldn't be left in charge of a plastic spoon, less still hold a driving license.

And then there was the gentleman who pulled out in front of me and another cyclist (both wearing hi-viz) and then proceeded to give us a regal wave out of the window in a bizarre gesture which I couldn't work out whether was some kind of apology or he was trying to call in a helicopter.

And then, for some reason, Leyton and Leytonstone were absolutely gridlocked tonight. So the last part of the journey had me filtering through the high road and trying to avoid the muppets zooming past at 40mph for 10 yards to the next queue.

Did everyone have their brains removed over the long bank holiday? Am I living in some kind of Zombie "B" movie where the main characteristic is that all the zombies are really, really sh*te drivers?

glad it wasnt just me today. had a black cab with hazards on in Bishopsgate pull out as i was going past him in the morning, then on the way home some idiot pull out in front of me as i was trying to come off the roundabout by the Rotherhithe tunnel. Special mention to the prat who tooted me up on a clear (no other cars or cyclists) two lane road at Greenwich this morning just because i happened to be the sole object in his way (and in secondary at that). As you say, one of the those days I reckon.

I've nearly had a big one coming off that Rotherhithe tunnel. Was it a car coming out of the tunnel after 2 minutes underground with I-can-no-longer-look-right tunnel vision?

Children, with or without 1 ton vehicles, get flighty in windy weather. I'm not sure that it affects grown ups in the same way.

You've had a bad day.

But for every bad cycling day, there are ten good cycling days.

As for the incidents is there anything you could have done for prevention?

Well, if I had equipped myself with a high powered sniper rifle and a license to kill, I may prevented a few incidents, as well as leaving a trail of bloodshed through East London.

The left hooks (and most weren't appalling apart from the Stratford one, just stupid) were all from roads with multiple lanes, and the car overtaking in the other lane whilst I was in primary. A11 at Stratford I command the lane these days after having idiot overtakes even in strong secondary, especially on the junctions for Westfield. But short of weaving around like some kind of errant firework, I am not sure what I could do to control multiple lanes of traffic.

I have some camera footage, but not much. I may upload if I can be bothered. The left hook at Stratford wasn't recorded, neither was "bizarre hand waving man" (camera doesn't like the wet). On the taxi overtake I was in secondary, could be further out into the bus lane, but it is wide enough then to get some motorcyclists undertaking you which I hate more than I can describe.

Isn't Leytonstone always gridlocked? My son moved there 9 months ago and I've never known a worse place for traffic. I've given up trying to use the High St, as it takes 10 minutes to travel 100 yards in a car.

Leyton / Leytonstone is usually bad on the high road. Despite assurances that the traffic chocked local streets would magically disappear when the link road was put in! But it was something else yesterday - Queued from pretty much Stratford one way system to Cathall Road and then all along Leyton high road. I believe the Central Line was shut due to flooding, so I assume this had a knock on effect with the traffic.

My record in Walthamstow is around 1 hour to do a journey of a little over a mile. Temporary road works had brought everything to gridlock because people were jumping the lights and getting stuck in the roadworks. Cycling in this area is about the only sensible option if you want to get somewhere local relatively quickly.

All in the space of 10 mins! When I got home I was not in the best of moods! I often wonder, "why me?"
"is it worth the hassle of being surrounded by drivers that shouldn't have a licence?"
At least reading your post I know I'm not alone. So I'll not give up and I'll be brave enough to enjoy my brand new bike.

At the risk of getting told I need to be in primary / secondary / more assertive / less assertive etc. below is the mildest close pass I experienced on Wednesday, but alas the only one that the camera caught.

This was at Stoke Newington gyratory where I have seen some cyclists eshew the one way race track to continue up the wrong way through the high street. I have termed this manoeuvre the "Stokie Salmon". The video above reminded me of an incident a few weeks ago where someone did a version of this I could call the "Stratford Salmon". In a van. Luckily caught for posterity on my camera. I took out the sound because I was swearing at the van driver that he was going the wrong way around the Stratford 3 lane race track. He stopped and proceeded to do a 3 point turn to then go in the traditional direction.
