Starting the video with an image of a junior hacksaw, some evil sound effect laughter and a 'what happens next' caption, would have been a step in the right direction.
If we're talking handlebar mutilation, there's only one person on this forum who'll be helping police with their inquiries, am I right MacB?

As for video enhancements, I hear 3D is all the rage. Whhhooaa - that bollard flies right out of the screen!!

Don't give it to MacB - he's a chatroom stalker/groomer. His avatar may make him look like a harmless buffoon (3 years of tireless photoshopping no doubt), but in real life he's an ugly, predatory monster who abuses CCers on night rides (mostly with his droning "me", "me", "me" anecdotes and creaky knees). Some of the more vulnerable riders prefer to cycle into the sea rather than chat to him about golf.

Gaz, can you send me the 760 HD sequence - my mates will enjoy it...

You just made my pen rip through the first page of my little black book as it went over and over and over and over your name!

I'm going to err more on the side of caution from now on. New bars after any spill or 20K miles.

Now you've said that and I've watched the video again, I'm thinking I should replace my bars after my crash last year.

Full impact was on the right lever/hand, and although there isn't any visible damage I'm thinking I should replace them now.

They are carbon wrapped bars so that may actually help hide any damage, and although I've managed a handful of rides since then I haven't really put too much weight on the right arm whilst cycling yet.

Better safe than sorry I suppose

I had the 4 bolts of the stem clamp come loose in november last year. The steering became very vague for a few miles then distinctly wobbly at which point I stopped and found the handle bar clamp had become very loose around the handle bar - flat bar with bar ends on my hybrid. Oh, oh!! Quickly out with the multi tool and Allen key to tighten evrything up again. I could have sworn I tightened all the bolts evenly and equally when I fitted it a couple of months before. I put it coming loose down to a stretch of road that I cycle which the Council/Highways Agency resurfaced last summer which it didn't need at all. They probably had rather a lot of materials left over from another job and didn't know where to dump them so thought they would resurface and ruin this quiet smooth rural backwater road. It now has awful corrugations over it for about 2 miles. It's agony on the wrists as it shakes you and the bike to bits .

I do look lardy in that jacket - note to self -get a fitted Gore jacket next time. I want to look good when I hit the floor...

I did wonder...I wasn't sure it was you with the michelin man effect. Stream line it all dear, you've got the Man Mt fan club to maintain, hope you're not doing too badly otherwise.

P1ss-taking aside, that sent a chill right down my spine. Glad you're ok Matt.

Yep. Mine too - big chap power. Funny, when I saw the video, I thought it looked like you Matt - then you fell over and I thought it was me!
Hope you're ok now, and don't worry about GoreTex etc - apart from putting a hole in your pocket for a kick off, every subsequent rip is £50.
Oh, and I hope your road rash takes on a suitable heart shape for Sunday!

Just as an edit, here's my effort from last year, although it was a slo-mo bend whilst meandering along High St Ken with Des O...after having raced back from Bognor and descended Bury Hill at 72kph, on the drops and braking from time to time!

Check your handlebars! Mine weren't particularly 'old' but, I am probably guilty of strangling them etc...

That looked NASTY, Origamist: glad it seems to be no worse than road rash and bruises (been there) - bikes of course can be fixed easier than blokes .

Never had a bar break myself, though I did once have a broken seat post, but this was a slow-motion thing and I felt it going in time to do a controlled stop. Then it was a matter of 'honking' all the way home. I did once, years ago, have occasion to replace my stem (that was in the good old days of quill stems): I took the bar into the shop as well to be sure of getting a good fit, the LBS owner took one look at the bar and said, I'm not letting you out of the shop with that. He insisted I buy new stem and bar as a set. Then he pointed out the deep groove running all the way round the circumference of the old bar, caused by pressure from the old stem it seems. That gave me the jitters! But the LBS chap was doing his job right!

Moral is: check your bars regularly.

Hope you're feeling flush, O! You've got new bars to buy. And now you'll be inundated with invoices for all the new keyboards...
