A turbo trainer may be boring but at last it's your own bike set up correctly for your shape and you're unlikely to injure yourself.

All gyms are full of sweaty smelly people!
:training:xx(
I would rather be outside in the fresh air!
:bicycle:
At least at home on a turbo trainer, the windows can be opened and a fan can be used!

That's my two pence worth!

I only go to the gym to do interval sessions that would be unsafe and impractical to do on the road, and they are invariably less than an hour long.
I always take my shorts and adjust the saddle height, but frankly saddle discomfort isn't highest on the relative-unpleasantness scale anyway...

The upright bikes in my gym are horrible. After 10 mins of quite pacy cycling my sit bones wonder what's hit them! If I'm going to bike in the gym, it's on a recline bike which is easier on the derriere.
Never been near a spinning class and from what I've heard I'd probably end up in a heap on the floor....

I went to a gym once.. There was no bar !!
Luckily I found a nice pub nearby which I much preferred.

I use them Dec-March, they are not ideal I agree though I don't have problems "riding" for 1 hour+ and the gym bikes have TV's right in front. I don't ride in cold+rain, without them I wouldn't ride..

We have a bannantines which has a superb gym, sauna, pool ,steam room ,tons of classes and a nice cafe, beauty thingy and a creche. On site physio where i spend a bit of time but it a private pay per visit treatment.
I tried it for a year but i just find it expensive and boring.

give me the great outdoors everytime

The last couple of winters have not been pleasant in the SE. Lot of rain and, more importantly, lots of days here the weather has been damp and dismal. I don't find leisure cycling in those conditions very enjoyable! These are the occasions when I prefer to go "spinning" at the local gym.

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
I detect a bit of confusion - spinning bikes, generally OK - you can set them up to approximate a real bike. 'Exercise bikes' those upright machines with fat saddles and pedals - generally horrendous. Geometry all wrong, Q factor huge, padded saddles for the XXXXL size arse only.

I'd love to try a spin class but there are none on near me at a time I can get to.
I have a turbo, and used it lots the first winter. Last winter the novelty had worn off and I went on it about 5 times!
I have moved house now and there is no room for it inside anymore but I have a lovely, recently refurbished garage and intend to set it up in there with a telly on the wall. Life is full of good intentions!
